Donald Homer Weihs

Lieutenant Colonel Don “Trooper” Weihs, USA, Retired was born to Howard and Marie Weihs in Sherman, TX. He attended elementary school and high school in Sherman followed by attendance at Texas A&M College, where he studied mechanical engineering. While at Texas A&M, he entered the U.S. Army at the early start of World War II. He was trained at IRTC Camp Roberts, CA, followed by combat engineer training at Camp Abbott, OR and the Engineer OCS at Ft. Belvoir, VA, where he was commissioned. His unit was shipped to the China Burma India Theater, where he served until the end of WWII. He was then integrated into the Regular Army with a permanent commission and assigned to the 38th RCT at Camp Carson, CO, where he met and married Ruth Gramlich, his devoted wife of 60 years. While at Camp Carson, he was selected as a member of the US Olympic Ski Team and competed in the 5th Winter Olympics in 1948 at St. Moritz, Switzerland. His Army career included various assignments around the world until his retirement in 1970. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and a number of other medals and awards. Following his distinguished career in the U.S. Army and NATO, he retired and moved to live in Bremerton, WA where he worked for Park Shore Real Estate for several years. He will be buried at Tahoma National Cemetary.

He is survived by his daughter Donna Hawkins (Joe) of Fairbanks, AK, his son Donald Weihs Jr. of Ramona, CA, and sister-in-law Louise Starita of Cocoa Beach, FL.

Donald was preceded in death by Ruth, his beloved and devoted wife of 60 years, and by his parents, two brothers Howard Jr. and William, and three sisters Gloria, Patricia Hall, and Mary Helen Morgan.
