GERALDINE LUETGE
February 28, 1923 - January 25, 2016
Geraldine Luetge, second daughter of Gerhard W. and Isabel Mittanck, was born February 28, 1923, in Bellville at the home of her foster grandmother, Meta Lyth. Her family lived on a corn, cotton and watermelon farm in the Center Hill Community, where she helped
with whatever needed to be done.
She attended school at Buckhorn, Freitag, Bellville High School, Sam Houston State Teacher’s College and Texas A and M University. She taught school in Fayette, Austin and Washington counties for 31 years.
Geraldine was a member of the Bellville Methodist Church, attending from the Cradle Roll and continuing until her marriage, when she moved her membership to the Industry United Methodist. She was a member of Sunday School, taught in Sunday School, was a member
of the choir, United Methodist Women, Bertha Circle, Prayer Shawl Ministry, etc..
Geraldine married LeRoy Luetge on June 29, 1944, lived in the Schoenau Community, and their children are Bertha Faye and Gareth Lee. They raised cotton, corn, maize, wheat, pecans and cattle. After retirement, she wrote two books, SCISSORTAILS STILL RETURN
TO SCHOENAU, a history of the Schoenau Community, and KILLDEES AT NIGHT, a family history. She also enjoyed caring for her grandchildren, gardening, reading, and writing and writing for the New Ulm Enterprise since 1973.
She was a member of the Texas German Society, and was president of the Austin County Chapter when the State Convention was held in Shelby, also assisting with the beginning of the Witte-Schmid Museum in Schoenau.
Those going on before her were her husband of 63 years, LeRoy Luetge, mother and father, mother and father in law, Heinrich and Minna Luetge, her sisters, Meta Isabel Pipkin and Evelyn Haedge, her brother Eugene Mittanck, a brother-in-law, Bill Pipkin, a son-in-law,
Jim Tucker and her grandparents.
She is survived by her daughter, Bertha Faye and husband Ted Morrow, her son, Gareth Lee and wife Merrie Elizabeth Luetge, grandchildren and great-grandchildren Warren and Rachael Barnett and children Taylor, Andrea and Mason Barnett, Jordan and Becky Barnett
and children Cameron, Levi and Zayne Barnett, Lauren and her husband Kyle Rogers, Thomas Luetge, her sister-in-law, Dorothy Mittanck, brother-in-law, Milbert Haedge, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services under the direction of Knesek Funeral Chapel of Bellville, held at the Industry United Methodist Church with burial at the Methodist Church Cemetery beside her husband.
