Wayland Adams Simmons
August 15, 1940 - June 30, 2015
Wayland Adams Simmons of San Antonio met his Lord on June 30th. Wayland was born in San Antonio on August 15, 1940 and was a graduate of Edison High School in 1958. From humble beginnings, this boy from San Antonio began a journey of service and a life well-lived. Given a one year football scholarship to Texas A & M University, he hitchhiked his way back to College Station for 3 additional scholarship years to earn the title of team captain and a Bachelor's degree in Business in 1962. That would have been his greatest accomplishment of that year, except he also married the love of his life, Dee Ann McCauley that same year. Soon after, Wayland began serving in the United States Army as 1st Lieutenant in Fort Knox, Kentucky and Korea through 1964. When his service ended, he attended St. Mary's Law School and graduated in 1971, while continuing his love of football by playing for the San Antonio Toros. He began his legal career working for the District Attorney's office, but he knew he wanted to serve his fellow Texans and was elected to the Texas House of Representatives from 1971 - 1974. He loved his time as a State Representative where he served as a statesman and a champion of causes for Bexar County and San Antonio.
Wayland and Dee Ann also made homes in Port Aransas and Goliad. Wayland practiced law in Port Aransas and served as the Democratic Party Chair for Goliad County. Wayland built businesses, created lifelong friendships, and was quick with a smile and a joke wherever he went. Through all of his life, Wayland's love of the Lord informed all that he did. Wayland faithfully served as a deacon at Trinity Baptist Church for 20 years.
Wayland adored his family and was adored by them. He is survived by his wife he cherised, Dee Ann McCauley Simmons, his two daughters and their families: Andrea and Darrell Schaper of San Antonio and their children Alexandrea and Claire, Delise and Tim Crimmins of San Antonio, and their children Emma, Sam, Aidan and Olivia; his sisters Joy Potts of San Antonio and Linda Holland of Burnet, Texas. In Heaven, he will reunite with his father and mother, Arthur and Lena Simmons, his sister Arthurene Cornitius of Kansas, his brother A.L. Simmons of San Antonio, and Jesus, who he eagerly awaited his lifetime to embrace.
An Honors Ceremony in his honor will be held at Fort Sam Houston at 11 am on Monday, July 13th followed by a memorial celebration service and reception at Trinity Baptist Church at 319 E. Mulberry at noon.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association .
