Expanded obituary written by granddaughter

Cecil "Coot" Edward Davis, class of 1953, passed away peacefully with family by his side June 5th, 2015. He was born in San Angelo, TX February 17, 1931 to Catherine Cox Davis and Cecil Edward Davis. Soon afterwards, they moved to San Blas, Mexico where the family ranched. Cecil rode on a train by himself to Dallas to attend first grade. The family moved to Montell where he learned sheep and goat ranching and fence building.
He attended Texas A&M College after being inspired by a local Aggie and the high school ag teacher, Word Sherrill, who took the students on 4-H field trips around the state. Coot hitchhiked (or “rode his thumb”) to campus from his freshman year, fall of 1949 through most of his entire enrollment at Texas A&M and lived in the horse barns off Jersey Street (now George Bush Drive) his senior year (1952-1953). As a member of A Company Field Artillery in the Corps of Cadets, Coot joined the Livestock Judging team and traveled throughout the country with the "Big Hat Boys", his fellow teammates.
While at Texas A&M, Coot courted his soon to be wife Virginia Lee Wood of Uvalde, Texas. Virginia remembers meeting up with Coot around campus after being “shipped' in by train from Southwest Texas College. They married on June 12, 1954.
Upon graduation from TAMC, he served in the US Army Field Artillery during the Korean War. In his professional life, Coot was a farmer, a rancher, a banker, a Real Estate Broker, a Real Estate Appraiser, for many years the only VA appraiser in south Texas, and an entrepreneur.
Coot is survived by his wife Virginia Wood Davis, his sister Nancy Davis Ham, his children Susan Davis Gerhardt and husband David, Mary Anna Davis Murphy '78 and husband Michael '81, Robert Edward Davis '80 and wife Mary Ann '80 and James Harper Davis '83 and wife Tip. To instill a tradition of Aggie Spirit in his grandchildren, Coot invited each of his 11 grandchildren to an Aggie football game during their junior year in high school. This left a lasting impression on each of them and encouraged four of them to graduate from the school that meant so much to their grandfather.
Services were held at the church Coots family attended and his mother played the pump organ at, the Montell Methodist Church, on June 13th. The service was officiated by Reverend Donald Tabbs, TAMC class of 1953 alongside Coot. Donald, or ‘Skeezix’ as he was called by Coot, was on the Livestock Judging Team as well, and remembers Coot as the stabilizer of the group of ‘big hat boys’.
Donations may be made to El Progreso Library, 301 W. Main St., Uvalde, TX 78801.
