Wickliffe Black Vennard, Jr.
LAFAYETTE - Wickliffe Black Vennard, Jr., 82, passed away peacefully late in the afternoon of Friday, May 8, 2015 at Rosewood Retirement & Assisted Living Community in Lafayette where he resided for one year and ten months.
Wickliffe Black "Wick" Vennard, Jr. was born in Houston, Texas on September 3, 1932 but has been a resident of the Lafayette area for most of his life. He graduated from Lamar High School in Houston, Texas and thereafter attended Texas A & M University where
he obtained a degree in Agriculture while a member of the R.O.T.C. While at Texas A & M he was an avid golfer and Captain of the Aggie Golf Team. Additionally, he lettered in wrestling. Mr. Vennard served his country proudly in the United States Army enlisting
in 1955 and was involved in the Korean Conflict. For many years Mr. Vennard was involved in the cattle business on some of his family property known as St. Clair Plantation. Thereafter he was involved in investments. He enjoyed traveling. When at home he involved
himself in fitness activities at Red Lerille's Health Club where he excelled in running and weightlifting on a daily basis. He was an excellent tennis player and won singles and doubles tennis titles at both Red Lerille's Health Club and Oakbourne Country
Club.
Brud, as he was known by family members was preceded in death by his parents Wickliffe Black Vennard, Sr. and Lucile Mae Nickerson Vennard; one sister, Lucile Vennard Keeney; and one brother, John Cameron Vennard. He leaves to cherish his memory two nephews,
Huey C. Keeney, Jr. of Tyler, Texas and Randolph V. Keeney of Houston, Texas; three cousins, all of Lafayette, Richard D. Chappuis, Jr., also Brud's health care provider, Cherie Chappuis Kraft, and John Nickerson Chappuis; and numerous grand nieces and grand
nephews.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Rosewood Retirement & Assisted Living Community, an exceptional facility and particularly Carmen R. LaCombe, Rella Handy, Ninette Charles, Annette Pierson, Rachelle McZeal, Kim Prejean and Penny Durke.
The family also gives special thanks to the nurses, doctors' and staff of Southern Care Hospice, including Teresa Babineaux and Laci Guidry, for their kindness, compassion, and gentle care given to Mr. Vennard during his time of need while gallantly fighting
a terminal cancer.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family will celebrate a memorial service for Brud at St. Clair Plantation.
