Charles Johnson
1925-2015
Charles 'Chuck' Johnson passed away on Friday, February 6, 2015, due to Alzheimer's disease. Charles was born in Houston, Texas on April 6, 1925, son of the Honorable Byron Johnson and his wife, Grace Carlisle Johnson. In 1940, Charles transferred from San
Jacinto High School to Allen Academy in Bryan, Texas, and was later admitted to Texas A&M University to study civil/structural engineering. He interrupted his studies in 1943 to join the Air Force. He completed training as a navigator and was preparing to
join the air assault on Japan when the war ended in September, 1945. Charles returned to Texas A&M, finished his degree, and re-enlisted in the Air Force in 1950. He successfully completed pilot training, ultimately serving as a test pilot and flight leader
at Thule AFB and Presque Isle AFB before hanging up his wings for good in 1954 and returning to engineering in Houston. Charles remembered those four years fondly, and retained a strong interest in aviation, obtaining his private pilot's license in the 1950's.
He owned and operated a variety of private aircraft, and often made visits to aviation museums part of his travels. Charles spent most of his early career at Fish Engineering as assistant chief structural engineer. His work led to an extended stay in Argentina,
where he developed an enthusiasm for Latin American culture, especially the dance music. Charles enjoyed showing off his Latin dance moves when given the opportunity. He later worked as the manager of civil/structural and pressure design at the Randall Corporation
where he and his wife made a great many good friends. Charles enjoyed travel throughout his long life, especially if it involved going far away to a new place, taking pictures of his discoveries, and having a cold beer at the end of the day. He is survived
by Jean, his beloved wife of 53 years, his three children - Lyn Johnson Schucking of Laguna Beach, CA, Bret Taylor Johnson of Chicago, IL, and Cori Johnson Hyland of Dallas, TX - and fourteen grandchildren. The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation
be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org). The family will hold a visitation on Friday, February 13th, 5-9 pm at Forest Park Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX. Service will held on Saturday, February 14th, 2pm at the same location.
