Jesse "Corky" Casbeer was born in San Antonio, TX on July 16, 1928 to Jesse I Casbeer, Sr. and Nelda Martha Blum Casbeer. Although Jesse was his legal name, many people know him as Corky.
Your mother named you Jesse
but oh what rotten luck
Your daddy called you Corky
and that's the name that stuck.
Corky grew up in San Antonio with his 2 sisters, Ann "Sis" and Betty and brother Larry "Bubbas"; all born within a 4 year span. Corky held many jobs starting when he was in his teens. He started as a paper boy delivering newspapers on his bike and later took
a job as a carhop at the local burger stand. Corky joined the U.S. Army straight out of high school and served from 1946-1948 at Sam Houston Base in San Antonio, TX. He used money from the GI Bill to attend college at Texas A&M. Corky joined his grade school
buddy, Bob Hedrick along with Bill Hensch, Elgin Faulkner and Carroll Davis at A&M and became Aggie Buddies for life. Corky studied Civil Engineering at Texas A&M and is proud to be a member of the Class of 1952. Corky worked in the railroad industry his entire
adult life starting out as a Rodman and working his way up to Assistant Division Engineer for Southern Pacific. He spent many years investigating derailments which involved a lot of travel. When Corky tired of all the travel involved, he began work constructing
railroad tracks as a partner in a small firm. In 1988, He formed his own consulting company, Casbeer Railroad Engineering & Consulting, in which he designed railroad tracks. Corky loved his work designing track layouts on Auto-Cad in his home office. He enjoyed
it so much that he couldn't imagine why anyone would want to retire. He was working on one of his largest projects ever until a couple of weeks before his passing.
Corky was also a die-hard Aggie (season-ticket holder) who couldn't wait for football season each year and had recordings of all the Aggie games dating back to 1991. He would attend as many games as possible each year. Corky also loved listening to music and
had (2) 300 disc players, shuffling over 750 CD's through a sound system that could be heard throughout the house. He especially loved Big Band and Sweet Band music. Corky and Kit, enjoyed traveling with the Traveling Aggies and Taulk Tours throughout much
of Europe and Egypt (his favorite trip) over the last 16 years.
Corky passed away on Christmas Day afternoon after a courageous 14 month battle with squamous cell cancer. While we will miss him dearly, Corky was a faithful believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and we know that he is celebrating in Heaven now with no more pain.
Corky is survived by his wife, Katherine "Kit" Casbeer; son & daughter-in-law, Jeff & Linda Casbeer of Stillwater, MN; daughter and son-in-law, Julie (Casbeer) & Joe Gandy of Houston, TX; sisters, Ann Haskell, Betty Carroll and brother, Larry Casbeer; grandchildren,
Joshua Gandy and Caitlin Casbeer.
