Services for Gerald Meyer ‘Jerry’ Eubanks, 83 of Longview, affectionately known as ‘Chief’ by his family, will be 1 pm, Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church with Reverend Kemper Huber officiating. The committal be 10:30 am, Wednesday,
February 5, 2014 at the Kilgore Cemetery.
Jerry was born on January 8, 1931 in Smackover, Arkansas. His parents Jack Lowe and Rose Meyer Eubanks came to Kilgore, Texas during the oil boom. He excelled both as a student and an athlete, earning a letter for football as star running back at Kilgore
High School. After first attending Kilgore Junior College, Jerry graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M in 1953, where he enjoyed his classmates and stayed connected through travel and reunions. Though his Aggie ring was long worn
smooth, the core values it represents have been evident throughout Jerry’s life. Like his father, he spent the majority of his career with Sun Oil Company, rising to Southeastern Division District Manager; then with R. Lacy, Inc. in Longview after retiring
from Sun in 1987. In 1980, Sun sent him to the Columbia University Business School in New York City. The close-knit Sun Family played an integral role throughout Jerry’s life. He fondly remembered his days of growing up in Sun Camp in Kilgore.
It was at Kilgore Junior High that he met the love of his life, Nora Gene Elder, the daughter of the late E.C. ‘Gene’ and Nora Kennedy Elder. They married on June 16, 1951 at Kilgore First Presbyterian Church.
Professionally, Jerry was active with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), a member society of The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, American Petroleum Institute (API), the Deep East Texas A&M Club, Century Club member
of The Texas A&M Association of Former Students and in 2008 was inducted into the Sul Ross Group at Texas A&M. He served on the board of East Texas Salt Water Disposal Company. Jerry attended St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, where he served in leadership
roles as Deacon, Elder, Trustee and Treasurer. He supported East Texas Literacy Council as well as numerous other charities and events. One of his career highlights with Sun Oil was his time as Robert Lee, Texas Area Petroleum Engineer where he worked closely
with the Colorado River Municipal Water District on the West Texas Waterflood Project, known as the ‘Six Month Miracle’, which brought vital quality water availability to Coke, Mitchell and Nolan counties.
Jerry also enjoyed fishing and other sports, introducing his kids to Aggie football with a very cold trip to the 1968 Cotton Bowl to see A&M beat Alabama 20-16. In retirement, Jerry was able to achieve his goal of playing over 200 different golf courses.
His ‘Golf Group’ was an important part of his life, providing friendships and travel adventures. He was also a member of Oak Forest Country Club and Cherokee Club. Jerry’s family, friends and employees remember him as a hard-working man of integrity, who
sought excellence in all he did with a fierce loyalty to his values.
He is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Nora Gene; sister Evelynn Eubanks of Kilgore, Texas; son Gerald Meyer ‘Jay’ Eubanks Jr. and wife Karen of Cypress, Texas; daughter Shelley Eubanks Potter and husband Jeff of Dallas and Longview, Texas; and his greatest
delight: 2 granddaughters, Erin Eubanks Crowell and her husband Scott of McKinney, Texas; Gena Eubanks Rachal and her husband Clint of Dallas, Texas; and his precious great-grandchildren, Claire and Cullen Crowell of McKinney, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Very special thanks go to Dr. James Sawyer, Dr. Richard Hamer and his Care Partners at Hawkins Creek; also to Kay Rowlett Thomas, Mae Bradley, and Mary Walker, longtime family friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Dallas Chapter, 4144 North Central Expressway, Suite 750, Dallas, Texas 75204-3208, Longview Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 2551, Longview, Texas 75606 or the charity of choice.
