Two Texas A&M sisters, Abianne Miller ('08) and JennaDee Detro ('04), have recently launched Cat Spring Tea. A company that harvests the yaupon plant, the only plant native to North America that’s caffeinated and uses traditional tea and mate preparation
methods to create a yaupon tea. In addition to caffeine, yaupon is rich in antioxidants and tannin-free, so it has a smooth taste. They are harvesting, processing, and packaging right here in Texas to create a delicious yaupon tea. The U.S. currently imports
the vast majority of its tea and coffee from abroad so it's exciting to see a Texas company creating home produced tea for drinkers here and across the country and creating local jobs in the process.
Native Americans in Texas had enjoyed yaupon for centuries, and yaupon was exported to England and France in the 17th century but has since been forgotten and most farmers bulldoze and burn the "weed". Just as Cat Spring Tea are looking to give this local
forgotten and overlooked resource a second chance, they are also partnering with Texas organizations to create second chance employment opportunities to continue to grow the business.
