James Leroy Mayben
September 12, 1926 - November 21, 2013

James Leroy Mayben, 87, of Pottsville, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Hamilton Healthcare Nursing Home. Funeral services have been set for 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 26 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Pottsville with Pastor Don Kingman officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

He was born on September 12, 1926 in the Atherton Community in Lampasas County, the son of Roy and Donah Fox Mayben.

After graduating from Lometa High School, he entered Texas A&M but was drafted shortly afterwards because of World War II. He was stationed in Frankfurt Germany where he met and married Irma Malcherek. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to Texas A&M, graduating in 1951. After graduation, he was recalled to duty and joined the Air Force serving until 1958.

In the summer of 1958 he and his family moved to Pottsville where he had accepted the position of AG teacher to the Pottsville ISD. While there he joined the Pottsville Trinity Lutheran Church, where he accepted Christ as his Savior. He was also an active member of the community. He organized the first livestock show in Pottsville at the Pottsville Park. He became an active supporter of the FFA rodeos. He encouraged the youth by transporting them and their horses to and from the events during the summertime.

In 1965 he accepted a position with the United States Forest Service which relocated him and his family to Colorado and then Nebraska. After serving for more than 30 years, he retired and moved back to Pottsville. He enjoyed his retirement years by becoming involved in the church, helping his neighbors and community, farming and ranching. He also greatly enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved the time spent with his grandkids fishing, hunting, and attending their numerous sporting events.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Wanda Alexander and husband Durwood, also a cousin Kathryn Barnes who was like a sister.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, his son George Mayben and wife Toni of Bend, daughter Dorothy Young of Jonesboro, Michael Mayben and wife Barbara of Georgetown, and daughter Monica Mayben of Pottsville, his siblings Juanita Willis and husband Charles, Clifford Mayben and his wife Bobbie, six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and his faithful four-legged companion "Curly".
