DR. JAN TILLERY
Dr. Jan Tillery, former Professor of English at the University of Missouri Kansas City, died September 2, 2013 in Birmingham, Alabama, after an extended illness. Dr. Tillery was born in Slaton, Texas, on July 7, 1950, to the late Tim and Mary Tillery, two educators
who inspired in her a love of learning and a deep appreciation for the importance of education. She received her bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University, master's from Texas A&M, and Ph.D. from Oklahoma State. A beloved and inspiring teacher, she taught
at a number of universities as a faculty member for 20 years, retiring in 2008 as a Full Professor because of health problems. She authored more than 70 papers and presentations, and her research was featured in a front-page article in the New York Times in
November 2003. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Guy Bailey, former Chancellor at UMKC; stepdaughter, Dr. Jordan Bailey, of Durham, North Carolina; stepson, Nicholas Bailey, of Montgomery, Alabama; and step-grandson, Aiden Bailey, of Montgomery. A Memorial
Service will be in Lubbock, Texas, on Monday, September 9, 2013, [at 2:00 p.m.] at Hance Chapel on the Texas Tech University campus. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to benefit The Tillery Family Athletic Scholarship Endowment at Texas Tech University.
