David Madison Britt

WHEELER — David Madison Britt, 84, of Wheeler died Tuesday, July 16, 2013.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church in Wheeler with the Rev. Bill Stiles officiating. Burial will follow in Wheeler Cemetery. Arrangements are by Peppers Family Funeral Home of Wheeler.

David was born on May 5, 1929, on the Britt Ranch in Wheeler County to T.M. and Vera Barrett Britt. He graduated in 1947 from Kelton High School, excelling in athletics, and later graduated in 1951 from Texas A&M University, lettering in baseball. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army and served in the Infantry, 27th “Wolfhound” Regiment in Korea.

David married Paula Bledsoe on June 3, 1951, in Denton in the Little Chapel in the Woods. After returning from Korea, David and Paula returned to the Britt Ranch, where he engaged in farming and ranching. As a former student at Texas A&M University, he was very active in the university. He was a board member and past president of the 12th Man Association. He was inducted into the Letterman’s Association Hall of Honor in 1989, and designated Director Emeritus in 2000.

Locally, David was very active in United Methodist Church, serving in numerous capacities. He was a member and a past president of Kiwanis Club in Wheeler. He served as a president of both the Appraisal District and Hospital Board, each for more than a decade. He coached Little League baseball, and was selected Man of the Year by Wheeler Chamber of Commerce in 1974. He was a member of Mustang Booster Club and assisted Wheeler Mustang athletic department for decades, including announcing Mustang football games and track meets, keeping stats, providing newspaper write-ups and calling in midnight scores. Above all, David loved his family.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, 1st Lieutenant, Ben Britt.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Paula; two sons, Dave Britt and wife Mary of Wheeler and Lewis Britt and wife Jennie of Amarillo; four grandsons, Jake Britt and fiancée Ann Kidd, Josh Britt, Jeffrey Britt and Thomas Britt; and two sisters, Genevieve Britt Caldwell of Amarillo and Louise Britt Carvey of Fort Worth.

The family would like to acknowledge with special thanks, Dr. Lavelle and the staff at Parkview Hospital and Assisted Living, Hospice Care of the Southwest and Dustin Lee, David’s assistant and caretaker.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials be to Wheeler United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 89, Wheeler, TX 79096; or 12th Man Foundation of Texas A&M University, P.O. Box 2800, College Station, TX 77841-2800.
