Winfred "Lee" Baker, 81, of Bryan, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2012. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Hillier Funeral Home, 2301 East 29th St. in Bryan. Inurnment will follow at a later date at the Aggie Wall of
Honor at the Memorial Cemetery of College Station.
Lee was born in Vanderbilt, Texas, the son of Cole B. Baker and Mattie Vera Scarlett. He was Valedictorian of Vanderbilt High School and a member of the Fighting Texas A&M Class of '53. While at A&M, he was in the Corp and served as President of AIIE Engineering,
graduating with a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering. He served in the U. S. Air Force for two years before joining the Air Force Reserve as a Captain and then a 2nd Lt., serving another three years at Lackland and Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Upon retirement, he worked several years with Ernst & Ernst. Lee started his own construction company in San Antonio. In 1982, Jean and Lee opened Baker Systems and started Bryan ISD's Self Funded Health Plan. During the 26 years of service with Bryan ISD,
Lee made it his mission that the lowest paid Employee would have the same care at the same price as the highest paid Employee. Over 15,000 residents of BCS benefited from this mission.
Left behind from his passing are: his wife, Helen Jean Allen Baker; three sons, David Lee and Lisa Baker, Patrick Allen and Lynn Dimando Baker, and Larry Dale Baker; grandchildren, Melissa and Larry Gene Thomas, Bonnie and Teddy Poldo, April and Tony Ocampo,
Justin Baker, Patrick Cole and Jennifer Baker and Alexandria Baker; great grandchildren, Stewart Fritts Jr., Tyson Johnson, Joshua Thomas, Bryce Ocampo and Blake Ocampo.
