Paul Gupton
Paul Stephen Gupton, 77, resident of Dickinson, Texas, for 43 years, passed away on September 21, 2012, in Webster, Texas. He was born in Houston, Texas, to parents James Stephen Gupton and Lillian Lucile Gupton.
His loving wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Gupton, and sons Todd Gupton of Katy, Texas, and Kyle Gupton and wife Ashley Gillespie of Austin, Texas, survive him.
Paul was a graduate of Reagan High School in Houston, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and a Master of Science degree in Nuclear and Metallurgy Engineering from Texas A&M University
in College Station, Texas.
He had a distinguished career with the Monsanto Company at its Texas City, Texas, facility for 25 years, where he achieved the level of Senior Engineering Fellow. Following retirement from Monsanto, he owned a metallurgical and failure analysis consulting company
and continued his work in the petrochemical industry for 12 years.
Paul was a member of various technical societies for materials science, most notably the American Society for Metals, where he was a Fellow, officer, and active member. He received numerous awards for his accomplishments and was an international expert in materials
failure analysis, electron microscopy, the use of materials in highly corrosive environments, and the welding of exotic metals.
Paul served on the Industrial Engineering Department Advisory Council at Lamar University and established the Endowed George B. Tims, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund in Industrial Engineering in 1994 in honor of his mentor.
He was fondly thought of as an engineer's engineer and enjoyed pursuing his woodworking and model engineering hobbies. He was an avid fan of jazz music and built many of his own high fidelity audio systems.
Paul was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dickinson.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Dickinson.
