Stedman Eugene "Ted" Cary
Cary, Stedman Eugene "Ted," 73, retired professor and entrepreneur, died on May 10, 2012. Memorial service will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Broadway Mortuary Chapel. Ted was well known for his entrepreneurial spirit, his intelligence and ability to
"set the stage" so that his colleagues and students could succeed and grow professionally and personally. Ted often said he was fortunate to learn from some of the best teachers in American history. After graduating from high school in Steamboat Springs, Colorado
in 1957, he earned his bachelor's degree in engineering physics from the University of Colorado in 1961. He continued his education by completing graduate degrees in physics from the University of Illinois in 1964 and mathematics from Wayne State University
in 1967. He completed his formal education by earning a Ph.D. in computer science from Texas A&M University in 1973.Ted began his career in 1957 as a high school intern at Phillips Petroleum Company Research Center in Bartlesville, Okla., working in nuclear
physics. He was an instructor and research assistant at several universities between 1961-1968, and served as professor at Texas Southern University and Wichita State University until 1976.Ted founded Customized Man/Computer Interfaces, Inc., in 1972 and co-founded
High Touch, Inc., in 1984 where he served as president until 1990. He then switched focus and began teaching physics at Wichita East High School for the international baccalaureate program. Asked why he wanted to teach high school, Ted simply said, "It's my
way of giving back." In 1995, Ted founded his last startup Connections, L.C.Ted is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Eugene and Doris Cary; and brother, Robert Cary. Survivors include his loving wife of 23 years, Ginnie Cary; sons, Derek Thor Cary of
