Ellis Scott Ruby, 90, died Jan. 4, 2012.

Mr. Ruby was born June 15, 1921, to Clark E. Ruby and Callie Audrey Scott Ruby in Broadwater.

He attended Garden County High School in Oshkosh. He received his bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Nebraska and his PhD in range management from Texas A&M University.

His first job after college was as a professor at the University of Arkansas. His first child, Barbara Ann, was born in 1952 in Arkansas, after her birth Ellis and his wife, Irple Pearl (Swanson) Ruby, moved back to Lisco to manage the Rushcreek Arabian Horse Ranch for nearly 25 years.

Later he purchased a liquor store in Julesburg, Colo.

Mr. Ruby worked in international consulting starting in the early 1980's with a company out of Denver, Colo., where he travelled to Jamaica to rehabilitate a plantation that had been abandoned by its U.S. owners when the government of Jamaica was unstable.

He shared his agricultural knowledge worldwide through the Peace Corp in Sierra Leone, Africa, and through the Farmer to Farmer Programs of the United States with the WinRock Foundation and Cargill. Through that job he travelled to all of the countries created when the Soviet Union broke up, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan as well as Poland, Uruguay and the Phillipines.

Mr. Ruby travelled the western United States on a wild mustang during the late 1980s. He broke the horse and rode it more than 3000 miles while working for a juvenile rehabilitation organization called Vision Quest that ran a wagon train from Arizona to the Canadian border on year long expeditions.

He delivered Winnebago recreational vehicles and other automobiles all over the U.S. during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Survivors include his sister Mary Ellen Smith; daughters and son-in-law Barbara Ann and Daryl Wilken and Susanna Jo Ruby; son James Ellis Ruby; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one niece; one grandniece and two grandnephews.

Graveside service will be held June 15, 2012, at Lisco.
