Georgetown, Fl.

Lloyd Eugene Clyburn, 88, of Georgetown, Florida, died July 22 surrounded byhis family and friends. The cause of death was congestive heart disease andrenal failure. A 30-year resident of Georgetown, he was born August 26, 1922 inBullard, Texas, the son of the late Henry Esten and Mattie Payne Clyburn. He was the youngest of 6 siblings. On August 1, 1944 he married Juanita Annie Stanley, who passed away in 1998.

Lloyd received his bachelor of science degree in 1943 and masters in sciencedegree in 1950 from Texas A&M University in College Station and his doctorate in vocational agriculture from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1953. In 1969 he earned a masters of public and international affairs from the University of Pittsburgh.

During World War II, he was in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radio operator and radar technician on cargo aircraft, serving in the Dutch East Indies, Philippines, Okinawa and the occupation of Japan. After his discharge, he went on to complete his masters and doctoral degrees and was a pioneer professor in
the founding of Southwest Texas State Junior College in Uvalde, Texas. He then worked with the American Brahman Breeders Association in Houston, Tx. before joining the forerunner of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in 1957). With USAID, he served as an agricultural advisor for 27 years, residing with wife Juanita in Brazil, Cambodia, Vietnam, Bolivia and Haiti and working in the Sahel region of Africa. As a private consultant, he also worked in the Sudan, Kenya, Uganda and Somalia.

While directing a 1966 training project in Welaka, Fl. for U.S. agricultural advisors bound for Vietnam, Lloyd and Juanita fell in love with the St. Johns River and purchased property in Georgetown, where they built their dream home in 1978. They were both active citizens in the area, Lloyd volunteering with the Lions Club eye program, the VFW, the local fire department and many commissions and committees. One of his last projects was to help the local Lions Club create a scholarship fund for certified nursing assistants to continue their medical education.

Lloyd is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Lee E. and Gary Bricker of San Marcos, Tx.; son and daughter-in-law Steven A. Clyburn and Arlene Bickel of Oxford, Md.; grandchildren Carl Bricker of Istanbul, Turkey,  Annie Bricker Dooley of Austin, Tx. and Daphne Clyburn of Hagerstown, Md. His wife Juanita and his brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

His children held a memorial service for Lloyd in San Marcos, Texas on July 25.Those wishing to donate to the charity for certified nursing assistants that he helped establish should send contributions to the  Crescent City Health/Education Charitable Trust, c/o Tom Ball,  PO Box 437, Lake Como, FL  32157.
