Colonel Robert L. Humphrey, born February 22, 1930, passed away on July 23, 2011 at the age of 81. Bob lived a very full life with a multitude of diverse life experiences and career accomplishments. In addition, Bob was a humble, kind, compassionate, generous man, and a loving father and husband who always put his family first. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Linda, children Mike (wife Pam) and Jen (husband Chris), 5 grandchildren and a brother, Neil.

He was a proud Texan who spent his childhood moving from small town to small town along the Gulf Coast due to his father’s job as a petroleum engineer for Texaco. At the age of 13, he began working on cattle ranches in South Texas as an afterschool and weekend job and so began his love of horses. Being a teenager during WWII, he manned coastal watch stations and as a boy scout, Bob was involved in relief efforts during the Texas City disaster. He graduated from Conroe High School, attended Tarleton State, served in the U.S. Air Force, attended Texas A & M graduating in the class of 1952 with a degree in Economics, and then earned a law degree from the University of Houston. During his summer breaks in college, he worked as a pipe layer, mud truck driver, on a seismic crew, and a roughneck in the oil fields of East Texas and Louisiana. He began a career with Union Oil Company of California in 1954 in Midland, TX, where he met his bride-to-be Linda Boes. They subsequently moved to Los Angeles where Bob became Deputy General Counsel for Union Oil. His work took him on travels around the world. Bob was also certified to practice law before the United States Supreme Court. During his military career, Bob was part of the Air Force Combat Control, became a prosecutor with the Air Force Judge Advocates Office and rose to the rank of Colonel in the Air Force Reserve. Following his retirement from Union Oil in 1993, he and Linda returned to Texas as quickly as they could and settled at Tierra Linda Ranch in Kerrville, TX.

Special thanks to the volunteers at Tierra Linda Ranch who assisted Bob with therapeutic horseback riding at the ranch following a stroke in 1995. Bob loved riding horses and felt most at home on one.

A private family service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Bob’s name may be sent to the Tierra Linda Riding Advisory Group, 389 Oak Alley, Kerrville TX 78028.
