Kevin Michael Dooney
Columbia River Bar Pilot, 46
Kevin Michael Dooney, 46, of Ilwaco, Wash., died Saturday, June 4, 2011, near Astoria, in an airplane crash.
He was born Nov. 23, 1964, in Radford, Va., to Thomas Alfred “Tad” and Marcella Glenn Dooney. His mother survives, residing in Estero, Fla. His father preceded him in death in 1994.
A ship’s captain most of his career, Mr. Dooney studied marine science and marine transportation, earning his bachelor’s degree from Texas A & M University in 1989. He continued to study at other marine technical training schools. After coming to the North
Coast, he became a pilot for the Columbia River Bar Pilots in March 2008. He also served as a harbor master on Sakhalin Island, off the coast of Siberia, Russia.
Family members said his hobbies and interests included surfing, camping and hunting.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Roarke Aidan Conor Dooney of Miami; a stepfather, Willard F. Williams of Estero; a brother, Keith Andrew Dooney of Longview, Wash.; and a nephew, Sean Thomas Dooney of Longview.
A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 10, at Peace Lutheran Church, 565 12th St., with Pastor Steve Dornfeld officiating. A reception will follow.
