Dr. Walter F. Juliff Jr., 89, of College Station, went to be with his Lord surrounded by his family on Monday, May 30, 2011. A time for his family to receive friends will be Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at Hillier Funeral Home from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Bryan with Rev. Theodore Foote, pastor and Rev. Bob Leslie officiating. A private interment service will be held at a later time. Pallbearers will be Dr. Tony Brown, Dr. Ken Pierce, Dr. Al Hopkins, Dr. Travis Small, Mr. Jimmy Bond and Coach Phil George. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Don Clark, Dr. Ken Knauer, Dr. Dean Gage, Dr. Charles Ernst, Mr. Bookman Peters and Mrs. Kay Connelly.

Dr. Juliff was born September 15, 1921 in Granbury, Texas. He was the youngest son of W. F. and Zuma Cogdell Juliff. He was preceded in death by two brothers Daniel Winston and John Edgar Juliff who died in early childhood and an older sister Lucy Juliff Martin.

Dr. Juliff's maternal grandfather was Daniel C. Cogdell of Granbury, Texas who founded and was president of the 1st National Bank of Granbury for 50 years. His paternal grandfather was a late 19th century pioneer who founded and settled in Juliff, Texas. southwest of Houston in the early 1900's.

Dr. Juliff spent his early childhood growing up on his grandfather's ranches. At the age of 7, after Dr. Vernon Scott cured the family's milk cow of milk fever, he decided to pursue his lifelong passion of Veterinary medicine. He graduated from Arlington Heights High School in Ft. Worth, Texas in May of 1939. He enrolled at Texas A & M in the fall of 1939 and was a member of the Army Corps of Cadets. He was a member of the Varsity Golf Team at Texas A & M. He graduated from the Texas A & M School of Veterinary medicine in 1946 and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Veterinary Corp.

After graduation he worked for Dr. J. D. Williams in Colorado City, Texas in his veterinary practice. In 1950 he moved to San Angelo, Texas. and purchased what became the San Angelo Veterinary Hospital. While practicing in San Angelo he had several outstanding business associates including Dr. Don Price, Dr. Ken Pierce, Dr. James Schroeder and Dr. Joe David Ross.

In 1976 he accepted a teaching professorship at the Texas A & M Veterinary school. From 1982 to 1991, Dr. Juliff was director of continuing education in the College of Veterinary Medicine. From 1987 to 2004 he was executive director of the FSIS project which assists the USDA in providing safe and wholesome meat and poultry products to the United States.

Dr. Juliff was elected president of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association in 1959 and was a lifelong member of the organization . He served as the TVMA delegate to the AVMA for 24 years. He was a charter member of the Texas Academy of Veterinary Medicine and served as chairman of the AVMA National Board of Examiners from 1980 to 1989. He was awarded the distinguished alumnus award in Veterinary Medicine by Texas A & M in 1996.He retired in 2004 after 58 years of being a licensed veterinarian.

He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Eva Juliff of College Station, Texas; and two sons Walter D. Juliff of Horseshoe Bay, Texas and Britt and Anna Juliff of College Station, Texas and their two son,s Kyle and Kent of College Station, Texas; a daughter, Jennifer and Tony Bohnert of the Woodlands, Texas and their son, Jay George of Austin, Texas; and one great-granddaughter, Emmalie Bohnert of Woodlands, Texas.
