George Maffett Jr.
George Allen Maffett Jr., 73, of Wharton, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at a Wharton hospital following a sudden illness. He was born Sept. 6, 1937 in Sanford, Fla., the son of Margaret Elizabeth McReary Maffett and George Allen Maffett Sr.

Allen was raised in Florida and attended high school there. Upon graduation, he served two tours in Vietnam in the United States Army, receiving the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for gallantry in action and rising to the rank of captain. On June 21, 1964 he married Nelta Anderson in Garland, Texas. He worked as a ranch foreman for the Runnels-Pierce Ranch, was the owner and manager of Bay City Machine and Supply, and following his “retirement,” worked for the Lower Colorado River Authority in Small Business Development. Allen was very active with his grandchildren, enjoyed traveling, hunting and working on land and cattle projects with his friends. He was very active in his church, First United Methodist, volunteering his time and also singing in the church choir. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12 at First United Methodist Church in Wharton with John Williams officiating. Internment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held Friday night, March 11 at the First United Methodist Church in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Nelta Maffett of Wharton; daughters, Tracy Maffett Waldorf and husband Keith of Singapore, Shawnie Fesyk and husband David of Calgary, Alberta; son, George Allen Maffett III, “Trey” and wife Cyndi of Wharton; grandchildren, Gunnar, Harrison, Saylor, Wesley, Sydney and Sam.

Pallbearers were Wayne Adams, Wayne Taylor, Morris Dean, Harry Finley, Bob White, Don Elliott, David Fesyk and Dr. Bill Yankowsky. Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren.

Funeral services under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home, Wharton.
