Samuel Newsom
Samuel R. Newsom, 77, of Henderson, passed away March 10, 2011. He was born Sept. 3, 1933, in Monroe, La., and was a 20-year resident of Nevada. Samuel grew up in Dallas, and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1956. Following graduation, he enrolled at the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, Texas, where he met and married his wife, Donna. In 1960, Sam graduated from medical school, joined the U.S. Navy and completed his internship at the new Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va. After serving three more years of duty in the Navy, Sam began an ophthalmology residency at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans. He then practiced at Ochsner for 20 years. After retirement, Sam re-entered Naval service at the Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, where he was director of Oculoplastic Surgery. In 1990, Sam and Donna moved to Las Vegas, and Sam practiced for eight years at the Shepherd Eye Center. Sam was an avid handball player, runner, cyclist and golfer.

Sam is survived by his wife, Donna; two sons, Michael and Stephen; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, at Christ Church Episcopal, 2000 Maryland Parkway. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary.
