Leon A. Wakefield
Leon A. Wakefield, Jr., age 89, died Sunday, November 7, 2010, in Huntsville Texas, surrounded by his loving children. He was born in Elkhart, Texas, to Leon“Buddy” Wakefield, Sr., and Hattie Davis Wakefield. He will be remembered for his love of life and family,
and his honesty and fairness to everyone he met.
Leon was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ in Madisonville, Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M at College Station in 1942 and was a proud member of the Aggie Corp(s) of Cadets and the Texas A&M Association of Former Students. He served as a 1st Lieutenant
in the U.S. Army Intelligence Division as a cryptographer in Washington, DC during World War II. For over 50 years, Leon, his brother Bill D. Wakefield (Class of ’46), and father Buddy (until his death), owned and managed a dealership selling and servicing
farm equipment, cars, and trucks. They also owned and managed farm and ranch land. Leon served on the Madisonville School Board and was a member of the American Legion. He was an avid golfer who loved to help others learn the game.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Wakefield. Leon is survived by his four children and their families: son, Leon A. Wakefield, III, wife Linda, of Athens, Texas and grandson Ryan Wakefield, of Tyler, Texas, son Jerry Wakefield, wife
Mamie, granddaughters Kerry Wakefield and Christie Cannain, husband Michael, and great grandson Landry Bowdoin of Centerville, Texas, daughter Peggy Wakefield, MD, (Class of ’72) and husband Stephen Horner of Corpus Christi, Texas, and daughter Leanne Wakefield,
husband Randy White, and granddaughters Elissa White of Huntsville, Texas and Lauren White Motloch of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his brother, Bill D. Wakefield, of Madisonville, Texas, and nieces Karen Bond and Kay Page.
Graveside service will be held in Madisonville City Cemetery at W. Trinity Street, Madisonville, Texas, on Sunday, December 5, at 2 p.m., followed by a Memorial service at 3 p.m. at the Church of Christ, 402 N.
Madison, Madisonville, Texas.
