Jack Dies Pyburn, Jr., 80, of La Grange, passed away suddenly on Sunday, October 24, 2010, at his residence.

Jack was born in West Columbia, Texas, on August 19, 1930, the son of the late Jack Dies Pyburn, Sr. and Martha Sophia (Rosenbaum) Pyburn. He married Shirley Kay Jones on December 27, 1950 in
Angleton, Texas and had four children.

He served in the US Air Force from December 1950 to December 1954. Jack was a proud member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 1958, with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Jack was a rancher for most of his life, but he also owned and operated Pinewood Inn Restaurant from 1977 until he sold it in 1980. He then spent the next 8 years as District Manager of J-W Operating Company in La Grange.

Jack was passionately involved in Boy Scouts as a Leader and Scoutmaster, serving on local and district committees continuously since 1966; he has served as Institutional Representative since 1995. Since 1972, he has been active in First United Methodist Church, (previously known as Travis Street United Methodist), serving on the Administrative Board and Finance, Building and Pastor-Parish Relations Committees. Jack was also in the Church Choir from 1972 thru 2008 and a past President and member of United Methodist Men. He was a member of the La Grange Noon Lions Club, Fayette County Texas A&M Club, Lee County Farmers Co-Op, Warda Local Farm Bureau, past President of Colorado Valley Independent Cattlemen's Association, and organizing member of Roadrunners Square Dance Club. Jack was a volunteer docent at Monument Hill & Kreische Brewery State Park for over twenty years and volunteered at Second Chance Emporium. Jack served on the Scholarship Committee for the Fayette County Texas A&M Club, and was the Scholarship Chairman for Colorado Valley ICA and Warda Local Farm Bureau.

In addition to his services to the community, he also enjoyed duck and deer hunting, canoeing, compass course hiking and studying the stars and constellations.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Kay (Jones) Pyburn; daughters: Rhoda Cathleen Tutt and husband, Wayne, and Jacquelyn Renee Head and husband, DeWayne, all of La Grange; sons: Alan Ray Pyburn and wife, Rebecca Lynn, of Mesquite and Clinton Robert Pyburn and wife, Kris, of La Grange; grandchildren: Mark Randall Phillips and wife, Myrna, of Allen; Christy Lynn Noak and husband, Greg, of La Grange; Jeremy Wayne Hankins and wife, Tracey, of North Richland Hills; Casey Wayne Tutt and wife, Kelly, of Red Oak; Season BrieAnne Ammons and husband, Matt, of Houston; Cassidy Renee Sawyer and husband, Dan, of Long Beach, California; Weston Alan Pyburn and wife, Suzanne, of Garland; Nicole Rochelle Orr and husband, Justin, of Bastrop; Hailee Anne Goellner and husband, Nick, of Sachse; Jennifer Renee Baskin and husband, Jason, of Austin; Derek DeWayne Head and Kayli Steger, of Nacogdoches; Charles Lyndon Pyburn of Mesquite; and Jacob Robert Pyburn of Cedar Park; and great grandchildren: Garrett Gregory Noak of La Grange; Cadis Matthew Ammons of Houston; Malachi Jeffery Orr of Bastrop; Gavin Grant Noak of La Grange; Nash O'Brian Ammons of Houston; Carter Wayne Tutt of Red Oak; Riley Renee Sawyer of Long Beach, California; Makayla Kathryn Orr of Bastrop; Cooper Lane Tutt of Red Oak; and Levi Wayne Hankins of North Richland Hills.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Robert Wayne and Shirley Ann Pyburn.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2010 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home in La Grange. The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 p.m. A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 29, 2010, at First United Methodist Church in La Grange with Rev. J. Paul Bruhn officiating. The Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 89,
La Grange, TX 78945, or a charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home, 208 W. Pearl Street, La Grange, Texas.
