Dr. Gary C. Palmer
Dr. Gary C. Palmer, age 73, of Tomah, Wisconsin, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2004, at the Johns Hopkins Cancer Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He was born on November 27, 1930, to Gary P. and Mary E. (Carley) Palmer in Garretts Bluff, Lamar County, Texas.
He was raised and graduated from Paris, Texas High School. From 1950-1953 he served in the United States Air Force. Gary received a Bachelors and Master's degree from Texas A & M University. He then received his Doctorate from Texas Technological University
in Philosophy and Psychology.
On August 30, 1968, he was united in marriage to Julia N. Lawler in Louisville, Kentucky. Gary spent over 40 years in Government Service, working as a Clinical Psychologist at the Tomah VA Medical Center from 1969, until his retirement in 1996. He was a pioneer
in the treatment of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and the founder of the original program within the VA system. He will be remembered by thousands of veterans for the care he provided and his dedication.
He is survived by his wife, Julia of Tomah, WI; sons, Gary B. (Melody) Palmer of Olympia, WA, John W. Palmer of Chicago, IL, Bryan A. (Donna) Palmer of Milwaukee, WI, Thomas N. (Valerie) Palmer of Houston, TX, David C. (Simone) Palmer of Frankfurt, Germany
and Daniel L. Palmer of Wheaton, IL; special nieces, Susan E. (Todd) Kniebbe of Orange City, Florida and Kathleen E. (Stephen) Crow of St. Petersburg, FL; grandchildren, Robert, Brian, Kevin, Elizabeth, Gary, Allison, Niles, Andrea, Tatianna, Meghan-Christina,
Todd Jr., Zackary, and Joshua; one great grandchild; a brother-in-law, Francis C. Lawler; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Palmer and a son, James Humphrey Palmer.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Very Rev. Steven J. Kachel will officiate. Family and friends are invited for visitation on Monday, February 16, 2004, from 4:00
p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5:30 p.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. Family and friends are also invited for visitation on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. The Torkelson Funeral Home is
assisting the family with arrangements.
