Death: Nov. 27, 2006

George E. Willis, 73, died Nov. 27 of lung cancer and other complications.

He resided in Odessa from 1958-91. He retired from Odessa College having served 25 years as chairman and professor of Electrical and Electronics Technology. For three years in the 1970s, he also served as chairman of Industrial Instrumentation and Electronic Data Processing. Willis received a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from Southwest Texas State University, a master's degree in School Administration from Sul Ross and a doctorate in Industrial Education from Texas A&M. He also had an FCC General Class Radiotelephone license with a Radar Endorsement. Prior to teaching at Odessa College, he spent eight years with the Ector County public schools teaching physics and electronics at Permian High School and math at Bowie Junior High School. In Odessa, he also owned and operated a two-way radio repair shop, and worked for a while as a transmitter technician for KMID-TV.

Willis was born in Del Rio and graduated from high school there in 1950. He worked as an announcer for KDLK. He enlisted in the Air Force in March 1951, and served in Korea. After returning to Del Rio, he was employed as a technician at the Central Power & Light Company's Devil's River steam electric generating plant, and later as a telegrapher for Southern Pacific Railroad.

Since retiring, he and his wife, Clara, lived at Terlingua Ranch. He also operated Tierra Terlingua, a small land development company. They traveled extensively, covering seven Canadian provinces, several states in Mexico, and every state except Hawaii.

He was a life senior member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers; a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Texas State Rifle Association; a member of the National Rifle Association and the American Legion. He and Clara also belonged to the Family Motor Coach Association, and to the three chapters, including Westex, South Central Wanderers and Harney Coach Wranglers.

He is survived by his wife and their son, Dean Willis of Plano.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Dean Willis and Ruth Jones Willis.

A private burial was held in the Masonic Cemetery in Del Rio.
