A memorial service for William E. "Bill" Hodge Jr. is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at Central Baptist Church in Bryan. Funeral services are set for 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Yegua Center (Old Rock Gym) in Somerville. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery also in Somerville. Visitation for friends and family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2008, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Bill Hodge was born in Cleveland, Ark. on August 12, 1923. He was the eldest son of Earle and Alene Holderfield Hodge. His family moved to Somerville in 1932 where his father was employed by the US Postal Service. Bill completed his grade school education and graduated from Somerville High School in 1940. While in school he played in the first basketball game in the "Rock Gym" and the first football game in the "Rock Stadium". He excelled in baseball, and his team won the Houston Post State Championship by defeating Baytown and Houston Regan High School.

Bill entered Texas A&M on a baseball scholarship, but his education was interrupted for four years while he served in the Army in World War II. He was in Paris for VE-Day and in the Philippine Islands when Japan surrendered.

Bill finished Texas A&M with a B.A. and Masters degree. He was employed by Bryan ISD. He taught Texas History and coached all sports. He was particularly proud of his '66-'67 basketball team for setting a record that may never be broken. All of that year's teammates graduated from college. Bill was one of the Principals who opened Bryan High during the first year of integration. He enjoyed his work with children, and they are still some of his best friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, William Earl Hodge Sr. and Alene Holderfield Hodge; a sister, Mabel Marjorie; a sister and husband, Betty Jo and Lavere Brooks; two sisters-in-law, Helen Hodge and Jewell Hodge; the mother of his children, Frances Simmons Hodge; his second wife, Gwendolyn Hudson Reily Hodge; and a step-son, Steve Reily.

Bill is survived by his wife, Yuvon Hodge; his sons and their spouses, Billy and Betty Ruth Hodge; Travis and Amelia Hodge, all residents of Bryan and College Station; and his daughter and her spouse, Betty and Robert Lopez, of Rangely, Colorado.

Additional survivors include: five grandchildren, Tiffany Brown, Kevin Hodge, Travis Hodge Jr., Alicia Lopez, and Courtney Lueras; four great-grandchildren, Austin, Ty Daniel and Nathan Hodge, and Noah Brown; and three brothers, Calvin Hodge and wife, Wanda, Charles Hodge, and Fred Hodge and wife, Esther.

Bill is also survived by seven step-children: Jacquelyn C. Karabasz, Jeannine C. Ball, Rebecca C. Howard, Kenneth Cox, Marc Cox, Kevin Reily and Judy McKnight.

Bill mentored many of the citizens of Bryan and College Station and Somerville. He will be missed. May his memory be eternal.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested, for those who desire, that memorials may be made to either Hospice Brazos Valley / Brenham Office, 302 East Blue Bell Road, Brenham, Texas, 77833 or United Methodist Church, Somerville, Texas, 77879.i
