Gary Norris Herrington 

February 18, 1936 - March 26, 2024 

On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, ”Coach”, Gary Norris Herrington, passed away at the age of 88.

Gary was born to Grady and Emy Herrington on a cotton farm near Bois’D’Arc, Texas on February 18, 1936. Gary was the oldest of two children and was raised in Baytown, Texas. He served in the Army after earning his degree at Texas A&M University. While at A&M, Gary was Captain of A Athletics, three time All-SWC catcher, Co-Captain of the 1959 Southwest Conference Champions, and was later inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame. Gary played professionally in the Los Angeles Angels organization before beginning a career in education that led to his coaching baseball at Lee High School in Baytown, Texas for 34 years. In 2001, the Lee High School baseball field was named after Gary.

On August 7, 1968, Gary married Anna Beth Silliman, who predeceased him in 2021 after 54 years of marriage. Gary is survived by his sons Brandt (wife Tara), Ryan (wife Laura), grandchildren Alana, Johnny, and Emily, sister Charlotte Laughlin (husband Tommy, nephew Scot, grand nephews John Ross and Jackson), sister-in-law Cherry Silliman, many close cousins, other family members, and friends.

Gary was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Baytown where he served as a deacon and greeter. He enjoyed sports, anything A&M, hunting, fishing, going to the farm, and cutting up with his friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, a unique application of the English language, and planning around the next meal.

A visitation is planned for Thursday, April 4, 2024, from 4 pm to 7 pm. Funeral will be Friday, April 5, 2024, at 10 am. All services will be at Memorial Baptist Church, 600 W. Sterling Avenue, Baytown, Texas, 77520.

The family requests donations in Gary’s memory be made to the Children’s Camp Fund of Memorial Baptist Church.
