Walter Wallace Low

February 18, 1941 - January 18, 2024 

Dr. Walter Wallace Low, 82, born to Asa Zenas Low and Mary Lou Garrett Low on February 18, 1941, in Jennings, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2024, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Visitation will be held on January 29, 2024 at Jefferson Baptist Church, 9135 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge, LA from 9:00 – 11:00 am with a service immediately following, Dr. David Goza officiating. Burial at 2:00 pm in Evergreen Memorial Park, in Denham Springs, LA.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Theresa Mullins Low, a daughter, Susan in Austin, TX; a son, Brian Low and a stepson Ashley Oglesby, in Baton Rouge; two grandchildren, Harrison Picou Low in Baton Rouge, and Catherine Sofia in Austin, TX; a brother Henry in Lubbock, TX; sisters Dorothy Grimsley in New Iberia, LA and Mary Lou Hughes in Bossier, LA.

Walt graduated from Jennings High School and then attended Centenary College of Louisiana from 1959-1961. He went on to graduate in record time from Texas A&M University in 1964, with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Immediately obtaining his degree he proudly volunteered his services to the United States Army serving in the Republic of Vietnam. Here he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his exemplary service. After his Army career he worked for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a veterinarian where he retired.

Walt was a member of Jefferson Baptist Church. Walt was very passionate about improvements in his immediate community. He spent countless hours volunteering his efforts to help develop and maintain the neighborhood lake and common grounds where he resided. Walt was also consistent with planting an oak tree in remembrance of those who had passed before him. Walt was an avid salt water fisherman. He loved sharing those catches too. Walt took great pride caring for his own yard, planting 39 various fruit trees and a selection of vegetables in his garden sharing his bounty with his neighbors. His backyard was a sanctuary for birds and butterflies.

But his first love was his family. With his family came great memories of traveling, fishing and holidays. He and his children had special trips that they shared together far away and at length. Later he and his wife shared the love of traveling. Each year a different place was chosen to explore. Of course he shared his fishing expertise with his grandchildren. Walt was so excited at Thanksgiving and Christmas the entire immediate family was together. He had his own recipes that he insisted on sharing for those days. He and his wife’s special day, until his later years, was New Years eve. This was their day that he made special.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Asa and Mary Lou; two sisters, Wanda Marie Low Ferguson, and Clara Alice Low Welch; and other extended family members.
