Roll Call Tribute

Walter "Butch" Markwardt III '96 July 7, 2023 8:58 AM updated: July 7, 2023 9:13 AM

Walter Earl Markwardt, III

September 15, 1967 - June 19, 2023

Walter Earl “Butch” Markwardt, III was born September 15, 1967, in Houston, Texas to Walter Earl “Buddy” Markwardt II and Phyllis Watkins and left his earthly body, unexpectedly, June 9, 2023, in Katy, Texas.

Butch never met a stranger, always offered a firm (sometimes painful) handshake and usually an inappropriate joke. To his many lifelong friends he was protective and fiercely loyal. After attending J. Frank Dobie High School in Houston, Texas, he made the decision to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. In the Navy he rose to the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer AW3, served in Desert Storm and received: Navy Unit Commendation, First Good Conduct Award, National Defense Service Medal, Second Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, South-West Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Butch would say the awards are nice but his most precious asset from the Navy was the brotherhood formed during that time.

After his Honorable Discharge from the Navy in 1992 Butch returned to Houston, Texas where he started his Cavender’s Boot City career as a phenomenal Salesman, Store manager and collected more forever friends. While working full-time, Butch attended his dream school Texas A&M University, Class of 1996.

Butch loved being an Aggie so much that in 2005 he decided to join the Texas A&M University Police Department and became a Police Officer IV Field Training Officer. Many of the Fighting Texas Aggie football games you would spot him on the sidelines, protecting the players and reciting every Aggie Call.

In 2017 Butch joined the Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital Security Team, continuing his life of service as team leader and once again making coworkers into friends.

There was one thing in this life that Butch loved more than the Navy, Aggies and Whataburger and that is his son, Walter Earl “Cody” Markwardt, IV. Whether it was baseball, football, wrestling or MMA fighting, Butch was Cody’s #1 fan and could be found on the sidelines cheering him on.

Greeting Butch in Heaven is his beloved father, Walter Earl “Buddy” Markwardt, II.

Left to carry on his memory is his Son, Walter Earl “Cody” Markwardt, IV of Katy, TX, Mother Phyllis (Jim) Sumpter of Plano, TX, Sister’s Terri (Steve) Trainer of Trophy Club, TX, Kaysie Markwardt (Casey Cadle) of Westminister, CO, and Nephew Ridley Trainer, along with numerous other family members, friends and Navy brothers.

Butch will be inurned with full Military honors beside his father, Buddy, Monday July 3rd at 10 am in Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Road Houston, TX. A Memorial service will be held immediately after the graveside ceremony at Elk’s Lodge #2628, 1050 Katy Fort Bend Rd, Katy, TX with a meal following the service.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.katyfh.com for the Markwardt family.
