Peggy Calliham '82 June 22, 2023 12:49 PM updated: June 22, 2023 12:57 PM

Peggy Lynn (Ames) Calliham

December 5, 1944 - June 5, 2023

Peggy Calliham passed away peacefully at home on June 5, 2023

Peggy was born in Houston, Texas on December 5, 1944, to Verda Thompson and E. E. Ames. At the time, her father was a bus driver for Greyhound, which is where he met her mother. Soon after her birth, the family moved to College Station to open and operate the first travel agency with taxi, bus, and airline charters for locals as well as Texas A&M faculty, students, and athletic teams.

Peggy attended Wee Aggieland Kindergarten and progressed to first grade at A&M Consolidated, where she graduated from high school in 1963. In high school she participated in Bengal Bells, Student Council and Girl Scouts and she was voted Senior Favorite in 1963. She attended the University of Texas for a year and a half before marrying Mike Calliham in 1964. Together, they had two sons, Michael Brooks Calliham Jr. and Sean Patrick Calliham. Parenting their sons was Peggy and Mike’s proudest accomplishment.

After Mike graduated from Baylor Law School, their family moved back to College Station where Peggy worked, and they raised their sons. Peggy resumed her college education at Texas A&M for a period and completed her undergraduate degree in Home Economics in 1976 from Sam Houston University. She worked in Bryan ISD, Snook ISD, and College Station ISD from 1977 until 1982, when she completed her Master of Education from Texas A&M.

She went to work for the City of College Station in 1982 as Director of the College Station Community Center and in 1987 Peggy was hired as the first Public Information Officer for the City of College Station. During those years she served on the Board of Directors and Blazers for the Chamber of Commerce. Peggy worked in that capacity for over 10 years and later developed and ran the College Station Teen Court and the first College Station Citizens University. She retired after 27 years with the city in in 2010 and pursued a number of volunteer activities. In 2015, Peggy took on a part-time position with the Brazos Valley Hospitality Association and retired for a second time at the end of 2020.

She participated in Christ United Methodist Sanctuary Choir, a gospel ensemble, ukulele band and Art from the Heart at Christ United Methodist. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, art and her many “sister friends.” Peggy’s family was her most precious blessing and achievement of a lifetime. Through her example, her children and grandchildren have grown to be people of strong character who love and serve God and each other with their whole hearts. Her sharp wit, home economics lessons, and genuine care for her loved ones will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her sons Dr. Michael Calliham, Jr. and wife Joella, and Sean Calliham and wife Lisa; grandchildren Ashley and husband Nick Porter, Aaron, Haley and Makenna Calliham, Joseph South and wife Jessica, and Joshua South; and stepsiblings Dave Barron and Vivian Moss.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday June 17th at 11:00 am at Christ Church – College Station 4201 SH-6 South.

Memorials may be made to the Christ Church Sanctuary Choir Scholarship Fund or to Hospice Brazos Valley.
