Roll Call Tribute

David Scherer '87 June 1, 2023 12:10 PM updated: June 2, 2023 3:00 PM

Dr. David Murray Scherer

August 31, 1966 - May 28, 2023

David Murray Scherer was born in Dallas, Texas on August 31, 1966 to Dr. James Murray Scherer (retired) and Diana Kay Scherer. He died in Lantana, Texas on May 28, 2023.

At an early age, the blue-eyed, toe-headed toddler showed affection for living creatures--catching rollie pollie bugs, snakes and lizards as a young boy at his grandparents’ country home in Victoria, Texas.  He continued to show his care for animals by participating in the 4-H program at Mary Carroll High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. Alongside his father, David learned to hunt and fish, and became an experienced and enthusiastic outdoorsman. As a young adult, he also competed successfully in weightlifting competitions.

After earning his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University in College Station, he opted to attend medical school versus veterinary school. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Cardiology with Texas A&M Health Science Center (Scott & White Memorial Hospital) in Temple, Texas. Since 1992, Dr. Scherer has practiced interventional cardiology for Baylor Scott & White Cardiovascular Consultants with admitting privileges at multiple hospitals in the Dallas-Ft Worth area. Always professional, caring and attentive, Dr. Scherer will be deeply missed by his patients.

Cardiologist was an appropriate profession for a man with such a loving heart and generous nature. Friends and family appreciated David too for his wit and creativity, in addition to his intellect. Like many Texans who enjoy smoking and grilling meats, he hosted cookouts for friends, family and co-workers over the years. His athleticism and love of the outdoors was reflected by his time spent running, cycling and fishing, and in his travels (often with family) to places such as Colorado, Alaska, Montana, and Mexico. He was equally happy relaxing at home with his wife Kelly and their chocolate Labrador Retriever, Lucy, often while cheering on his alma mater, Texas A&M’s Aggies, or the Dallas Cowboys, for whom he was privileged to serve as team cardiologist for several years.

David Scherer is preceded in death by his mother Diana Kay Scherer. He is survived by his father, James M. Scherer; devoted and loving wife, Kelly Scherer; his children Brian Scherer, Callan Scherer and Karis Scherer; mother of his children, Nicole Van Zandt; and his brothers Chris Scherer and John Scherer.

David and Kelly valued their time with family; along with immediate family members, his in-laws, nieces, nephews and grandchildren will miss him and are grateful for his presence in their lives.
