Roll Call Tribute

Robert Barry '87 April 15, 2023 4:07 PM updated: April 15, 2023 4:12 PM

Robert "Rob" Edward Barry
May 3, 1963 – April 13, 2023

Captain Robert Edward Barry, 59, passed away after a three and a half month battle with an aggressive form of colorectal cancer. He was born May 3, 1963 in Mobile, AL.

After growing up in Mobile, Rob attended Texas A&M University at Galveston. Graduating in 1987 with a B.S. degree in Marine Transportation and obtaining an unlimited third mate’s license, he began what would become a life-long career as a merchant mariner. Throughout that career as he obtained experience and licensing to sail as a ship captain, he mentored and trained so many shipmates.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Gloria Matherine Barry; his father, James Edward Barry; and his sister, Tillye Barry Semple.

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Michele Ann Finn; his sister, Cynthia Barry Coffman; his brother, Timothy Barry; a brother-in-law, H. Christopher Semple; two nephews, Henry Semple, Jr and William Semple; and a niece, Cullen Coffman Barone. He leaves behind countless shipmates who will remember him with fondness and respect.

Private burial services will be held at Magnolia Cemetery in Mobile, AL, with a celebration of life to be held in the future.

In lieu of flowers, his wife asks that donations be made to the Baldwin Humane Society in Fairhope, AL – a charity he long respected and supported.
