Two Association Team Members Honored As Fish Camp 2018 Namesakes

Holland "Holly" Wuthrich '16 March 7, 2018 3:57 PM updated: March 12, 2018 9:35 AM

Fish Camp, Texas A&M's largest extended orientation program, is "A Freshman's First Tradition." The 4-day camp gives freshmen a glimpse into life on campus, allows them to meet Classmates, make new friends and learn about Texas A&M.

Each summer, Fish Camp is held at Lakeview Methodist Conference Center in Palestine, Texas. It is composed of seven sessions -- A through G -- with seven camps in each session. Each camp is given a color and lead by two co-chairs and 24 counselors. A unique element of Fish Camp is that each camp is given a namesake -- "someone who has contributed to Texas A&M in a positive way." This year, two staff members from The Association of Former Students have the honor of serving as namesakes. Hannah Johnston '11, director of events, is namesake for Session D Green Camp Johnston, and Laura Miller '16, Former Student Programs assistant, is namesake of Session A Purple Camp Miller. A Fish Camp namesake has the opportunity to mentor and make an impact on their co-chairs, counselors and freshmen.

"Fish Camp had a profound impact on me and my Aggie experience. From an instant group to guide me through the stress of the first semester (and beyond), to unforgettable memories and lifelong friends. I could not be more proud to be a small part in such an incredible mission to teach the next generation of Aggies about our traditions, core values and the importance of inclusion and camaraderie." - Hannah Johnston '11

Camp Miller, Session A, Purple

Co-chairs: Hannah O’Malley ’19 & Martin Osorio ’19

"I am so incredibly honored to be a namesake for Fish Camp 2018. Fish Camp meant so much to me when I was a student -- I served as a counselor twice as well as a co-chair -- and I saw myself and so many others around me grow throughout my time. My love for Fish Camp actually drove me to become a Century Club member. As soon as I graduated, I made it a priority to give back financially to The Association of Former Students to impact current students as those before me impacted my college experience!" - Laura Miller '16

The Association is proud to support student organization such as Fish Camp. In addition to this support, The Association travels to each Fish Camp session to speak to the freshmen and welcome them into the Aggie Network. Last summer, we got an inside look at Fish Camp through the eyes of two other staff namesakes. Watch that video here.

Through generous gifts to The Association, we are able to be HERE for Aggies during their days as students and former students, THERE for Aggies as they make their way around the world and EVERYWHERE that the Aggie Network needs us to be. To make a gift, please visit AggieNetwork.com/Give
