Leo was born August 23, 1913, in David City, Nebraska, to Frank James Witkowski and Anna Marie Zeleny. His parents moved to the Plainview area in Hale County in 1916 when Leo was 3 years old. Leo and his brother Vernon helped their dad farm, which included breaking out sod with steam engines. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1932 and from Texas A&M, with a degree in Agronomy, in 1937. While at A&M, he was an end on the football team and ran the dashes in track. He proudly wore his Aggie & Letterman’s rings. He loved A&M. The education, experiences and friends he gained there were a big, big part of his life.

On August 7, 1940 he married his sweetheart, Louise Christine Weil in Plainview, Texas. They later moved west of Arney, Texas, where they farmed. Leo and Louise moved to Hereford, Texas, in 1961. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage. Louise died in 2008.

Leo was a charter member of the Texas Wheat Growers Association, and later served as the organization’s president from 1963-1975. A member of various agricultural organizations, he traveled supporting Agriculture’s cause, including Washington D.C. where he met with leaders there including a number of the presidents, and numerous Secretaries of Agriculture.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, twin infant children, his parents Frank & Anna, his brother Vernon, sister Winifred, and grandson Jacob.

He is survived by three daughters, Rita Huckert of Hereford, Lou Ann Rounds and husband Whitney of West Des Moines, Iowa, Jane Geppert and husband Dan of Arlington; one son Gerald Witkowski and wife Elizabeth of Amarillo; eighteen grandchildren, four step grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and nine step great grandchildren.
