Health Science Center Formally Merges With Texas A&M University

Stephanie Cannon '06 July 16, 2013 8:29 AM

Texas A&M University announced July 15 the formal addition of Texas A&M Health Science Center as a unit within the university—a move initially authorized in August by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.

“Today marks the culmination of nearly one year of careful planning and coordination aimed at placing Texas A&M in a unique collaborative and competitive position that realizes the extensive academic and scientific opportunities made possible through the merging of two leaders in biomedical education and discoveries,” said Dr. R. Bowen Loftin, president of Texas A&M University. “Together as one, we are now poised to offer a new model for education and research in the health sciences for the State of Texas.”

Complete execution of the transition is slated over the next 12 months with no plans to move or close any campuses or programs.

As a result of this realignment, students attending the HSC will be graduating with a degree from Texas A&M University, and students attending the HSC on or after July 15 will become eligible for the Aggie Ring based on the existing rules for undergraduate students, masters students, doctoral students, and professional students.

For current students of the HSC on the effective date in a degree-granting program of the HSC, the university will consider hours completed by the student at the HSC prior to the effective date as hours completed at Texas A&M University for purposes of the Aggie Ring. Students at the HSC pursuing only a certificate program will not be eligible for the Aggie Ring, consistent with the current policy. Further, consistent with current policy, prior graduates of the HSC will not be eligible for the Aggie Ring since they did not enroll in or graduate from Texas A&M University.

Additional details regarding Ring policies and ordering procedures for current HSC students will be posted at AggieNetwork.com and emailed to all current HSC students before the next Ring order period
begins on Aug. 26 for the Nov. 15 Aggie Ring Day.

Texas A&M Health Science Center provides the state with health education, outreach and research through campuses in Bryan-College Station, Dallas, Temple, Houston, Round Rock, Kingsville, Corpus Christi and McAllen. Its six colleges are the Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry, the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the School of Graduate Studies, the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy and the School of Rural Public Health. Other units include the Institute of Biosciences and Technology and the Coastal Bend Health Education Center.

“Our institutions have enjoyed a strong working relationship since the health science center’s inception in 1999, with numerous joint projects and several of its programs housed on main campus,” Loftin said. “So while we officially welcome our new faculty, staff and students to the Aggie family today, this transition actually represents a strengthening of the already robust academic experience and research environment.”
