Roll Call Tribute

James "Jim" Anderson '64 March 12, 2026 12:02 PM updated: March 12, 2026 12:13 PM

James Curtis "Jim" Anderson

September 10, 1938 - February 9, 2026

James Curtis Anderson passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on February 9, 2026. He was 87 years old.

Jim was born September 10, 1938 in Dallas, Texas where he spent most of his early years. The family later moved to Greenville and he became a standout high school athlete in basketball and track. After graduating in 1956, Jim attended Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the Corp of Cadets, and a member of the A&M freshmen basketball team. Home on break from school Jim met 17year old Linda Sue Pickard and fell madly in love. In 1958, while she was still a senior in high school, they eloped to Oklahoma, where they were secretly married with only a judge and their two best friends in attendance. The secret eventually got out and Jim returned home to support his young bride by working for the highway department. In 1960 they welcomed their first child, Suzanne, and Jim moved the family back to A&M and completed his BS degree in Civil Engineering. Their second child, Jeffery, was born in 1964 on the same day as the commencement ceremonies for his Masters Degree. In 1966 Jim left Albritton Engineering for a job with Exxon in South Texas. He spent the remainder of his career in the oil business working fields all across the US, Canada and Indonesia. He retired from Mitchell Energy in 1995.

Jim was a competitor in all he did in life, but he was always a gentleman and a good sport. He would watch or play any game or sport, but his passion was golf. He would race out to play after work, sometimes playing every day of the week. He maintained a single digit handicap into his 80's, won his club championship several times, was a ranked competitor in the Houston Area Senior Amateur Golf Association, had 7 confirmed hole-in-ones and had the distinction of shooting his age or better numerous times. When not competing himself, he especially enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren compete in their respective sports.

Jim experienced tragedy when he was young, and by his own admission was on the wrong path in his youth. He credited his father, Sherman Lyman Anderson, for re-orienting him to lead a Faith centered life. Jim mentored many young men both professionally and spiritually. He became a Deacon of The Woodlands Parkview Baptist Church, and was affectionately known as "The Reverend" to his golf buddies. Jim was the spiritual leader of his family, and lived a life of faith, with honesty and integrity. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Billie Anderson; his brother, Gary Dale Anderson; and his in-laws, John Lee and Bernice Pickard. He is survived by Linda his wife of 67 years; his brother and sister-in-law, Lynn and Sidney Anderson; his daughter Suzanne Anderson Brown (Richard); his son Jeffery Lyle Anderson; his granddaughter Sarah Feigleson (Michael); his granddaughter Lyndsey Elizabeth Anderson (Keith Geiger); his grandson Travis Brown (Natalie); and his grandson, Carson Brown (Kelsey). He is also survived by his 9 (soon to be 10) great-grandchildren, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

A private, family celebration of Jim's life will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday February 24, 2026 in the chapel of Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Drive Houston, Texas.
