Robert Lee Hailey

September 17, 1945 - December 28, 2025

Robert Lee Hailey, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, coach, rancher, and mentor, passed away on December 28, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on September 17, 1945, in Marlin, Texas, to Lester T. Hailey and Martha James Hailey, and lived a life marked by faith, service, humility, and an unwavering commitment to others.

Robert grew up in modest circumstances, raised without running water, electricity, or a family car. Despite these challenges, he and his brother, James, were consistently encouraged to value education, integrity, and hard work, principles that guided him throughout his life and that he taught to his children. From a young age, Robert developed a love for football and learning, passions that would shape his future and touch countless lives.

In 1966, Robert married the love of his life, Laura Linder. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. Robert earned his undergraduate degree from Rice University, where he played football and received numerous honors. He was awarded the HEW scholarship to complete his Master of Education degree from Texas A&M University and dedicated his career to education, coaching, and leadership.

Robert began his coaching career in 1969 in Grand Prairie, Texas, then Calvert, Texas. He then spent the rest of his career as a teacher, coach, and 17 years as principal in Franklin, Texas. Known for his strong character, generosity, and belief in his students, Robert left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of learning from him. He retired from education in 2002 to enjoy ranching and raising cattle, an endeavor that brought him great joy. Even in retirement, he remained active in his community.

In 1969 he began ranching with the encouragement of his father, Lester T. Hailey, and his grandfather W. T. Hailey. After retirement from “The School Business” he worked full time as a rancher.

A man of deep faith, Robert was an active member of the Methodist Church and organizations such as Retired Teachers Association, Texas High School Coaches Association and a very proud member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas. Robert played guitar, piano and proudly sang bass with his best friends as a member of The Brush Arbor Singer’s. He was also proud to have started Franklin High School Scholarship night to benefit students after high school. Those who knew him remember his generous heart, his willingness to help others without hesitation, his wonderful sense of humor, and his genuine love for people.

While Robert loved football, coaching, and cows, his greatest pride and joy was his wife Laura and their 3 children, 11 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren with a 3rd great-grandchild due in January. He never let a day pass without letting them know how deeply he loved them. His true legacy lives on through the students he taught, the athletes he coached, the friends he cherished, and the family who will forever carry his memory in their hearts and his legacy forward.

He is survived by his wife Laura, sons Mark Hailey and wife Monica, Scott Hailey and wife Tracy, and precious daughter Martha and husband Gene; As well as 11 grandchildren: Alexis Hailey & Eli Bazan, Jack Hailey, Mikayla Hailey, Melissa & Peyton Creery, Annie Hailey, Austin Hailey, Harvey & Cory Castro, Zachary Castro, Lauren Castro, Hailey Castro, and Harper Eitelman; as well as great-grand children Dennis Bazan, Emmelia Bazan, and soon to be Parker Castro. Also survived by his brother James Hailey and wife Judy, nephew, James Hailey Jr., niece, Jennifer Coburn and husband Grant. Great Nephew’s, Cooper Coburn, Cody Coburn and Great Niece Sara James Hailey.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. with a visitation held from 10:00 A.M. until service time at Franklin Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Tidwell Prairie Cemetery in Robertson County, Texas.
