Mary Ann (Pittman) Shutes
May 8, 1938 - February 7, 2026
Memorial services for Mary Shutes, 87, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2026 at St. Francis Episcopal Church in College Station. The Rev. Lacy Largent of St. Francis will officiate. A private burial will be at College Station City Cemetery following the service.
Mary Shutes was born in Paris, Texas, to parents Charles Truett Pittman and Hannah Mary “Mollie” Turnbull Pittman. The family moved to Wichita Falls in 1941, where Mary attended school, graduating from Wichita Falls Senior High in 1956. She studied piano from a young age through her high school years. Mary attended Texas Woman’s University before moving to Bryan-College Station where she resided for 67 years. She earned a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University. She studied English one summer semester at Oxford University in England, followed by student teaching in Scotland. Her career included working for Texas A&M in the College of Education, in Continuing Education, and in Admissions and Records. She also taught at St. Michael’s in Bryan. She was a long-time active member of St. Francis Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir.
Mary was a gourmet cook and especially skilled at baking. She made cookies, cakes, cobblers and hundreds of pies. She loved music and playing the piano. She loved the arts, particularly musicals, and served on the board of directors of The Theatre Company of Bryan-College Station. She enjoyed travelling, and took each of her three granddaughters on trips to Europe. She loved animals and was generous with people.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husbands Jack Bryant and Robert Shutes, and by her sister Charlan Ledbetter and brother John Pittman.
She is survived by her sister Ruth Hoepfner, children Anna Bryant Vitale and her husband Dan Vitale, Evan Bryant and his wife Yvonne Bryant, and Alan Bryant. Also stepchildren Chris Shutes, Jorie Chadbourne, Ross Naugle, and Nancy Naugle; grandchildren Hannah “Cassie” Schildknecht, Elizabeth Vitale Napier and her husband Alex Napier, Leah Vitale; and great-grandchild Paisley Prator.
