Barbara R. (Harvey) Lindsay 

September 18, 1938 - December 19, 2025 

Barbara Harvey Lindsay journeyed from this life to be with our Heavenly Father on Friday, December 19, 2025, at the age of 87. Barbara was born in Austin, Texas, to Reverend Alexander Waymon Harvey, Jr. and Mamie Wicks Harvey on September 18, 1938 – she was an only child.

In Barbara’s early years, she lived a life dedicated to music, education, and family. Barbara sang and played the piano during worship services at her late father’s church, Anderson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Barbara would go on to study Music Education at North Texas State University. It was here that Barbara met and married the love of her life, Samuel E. Lindsay. Barbara and Sam were married in Denton, Texas on June 22, 1958. To this union, a devoted and loving son was born, Samuel E. Lindsay, Jr.

Barbara completed her Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 1960 and served as a teacher, choir director, and vocal music instructor in the West Independent School District in West, Texas, and in the Bolton and Flora, Mississippi school districts. Barbara continued her academic studies and earned two additional degrees, a Master of Education degree in Guidance and Counseling from Prairie View A & M University in 1971, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M University in 1977.

Barbara and her husband, Sam, were deeply committed to the advancement and well-being of the African-American community. Throughout the years, they worked together at a number of historically black colleges and universities, including Paul Quinn College, Prairie View A&M University, Florida Memorial University, Edward Waters, and Huston–Tillotson University.

Barbara was a life-long learner and a dedicated professional who wore many hats throughout her career; she served in various leadership positions, including Academic Counselor, Associate Professor of Education, Director of Institutional Research, and Director of Student Support Services.

Barbara loved the outdoors, reading, and in her spare time, she enjoyed fishing. She was a member of Metropolitan AME Church in Austin, Texas. Her professional associations included the American Education Research Association, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

In 1998, Barbara retired to care for her husband and her mother, Mamie Wicks Harvey, after their health began to fail. In her later years, she maintained her voracious appetite for knowledge, but now, it was of the more personal variety. If she wanted to get a good conversation going, she would lean in, flash that charming smile of hers, and ask, “Whatcha know good?” That was her clever way of overriding any impulse you might have to give her a generic answer like “fine.” She was also playfully letting you know that she wasn’t asking for your bad news, she only wanted the good stuff.

As Barbara’s health began to decline and dementia began to set in, her cousin, Jacqueline Seaborn, frequently visited Barbara and made sure her health and personal needs were met. It was during these visits that Barbara began actively reliving the past. She loved her family and would set the dinner table for both her cousin, Julius Myers, who in her early years of life, she lovingly babysat and cared for when he was a child, and her husband, who had already gone to be with the Lord. Even when so many of her memories had faded, her identity as a wife and caring cousin remained.

Barbara was preceded in death by both of her parents, as well as her husband, Dr. Samuel Ernest Lindsay, Sr., and their son, Samuel E. Lindsay, Jr. Barbara leaves behind to cherish her fond memories and happy days: her cousins, Jacqueline Wicks Seaborn (David); Julius Myers (Carin); her cousins’ children, and a host of family and friends. Barbara will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 2, 2026, from 10:00 a.m.11:00 a.m. at All Faiths Funeral Services-North, located at 8507 N. IH 35 in Austin, Texas. The celebration of life service will be held immediately after the visitation at All Faiths Funeral Services-North at 11:00 a.m.
