Helene Andrews Polymenis
September 20, 1967 - December 19, 2025
Helene was born in Madison, Wisconsin, to Ursula Andrews and the late James Andrews. She grew up in the Pacific Northwest and studied in universities across the country, earning degrees from Brown (B.S.), Tufts (Ph.D.), and Texas A&M (D.V.M.).
Helene had a distinguished academic career at the Texas A&M College of Medicine, where she was a Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Pathogenesis until her passing. Her research on bacteria that cause foodborne illness brought her national and international recognition. She was named a Presidential Impact Fellow at Texas A&M, honored as an Outstanding Alum by the College of Veterinary Medicine, and elected to the American Academy of Microbiology.
Helene was a woman of rare grace and generosity. She was a natural beauty, inside and out. Known for her warmth and unwavering kindness, even to strangers. She welcomed students into her lab, often adopting 'stray' ones, offering mentorship and a sense of belonging to those who needed it most. A tireless squeaky wheel in matters of academic administration, unafraid to display her nonconformity. Those who knew her will remember her as a woman of principle, civically engaged, an advocate for patients, and a fiercely loyal mother. Helene enjoyed music, especially live performances, and loved traveling. She eagerly awaited her regular visits to Greece, where she cherished time surrounded by friends and her extended family.
She is survived by her two beloved daughters, her husband, her mother, and her sister.
