Thomas Taylor "Tom" Cole

May 12, 1945 - November 21, 2025

Thomas Taylor Cole passed away on November 21, 2025 in Franklin, Texas. Tom was born in San Angelo, Texas on May 12, 1945 to Luther Earl Cole and Helen Martin Cole during his father’s service in the United States Army. Shortly after his birth, they returned to Franklin.

Tom was a lifelong resident of Franklin and a graduate of Franklin High School in 1963. He continued his education at Texas A&M University, Class of 1967, where he majored in Political Science and was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets. He later returned to Texas A&M and received a Master’s Degree in Education in 1975.

Tom married Patsy May Cole on April 29, 1967. Their marriage lasted 56 years until her death on January 28, 2024. From 1968 to 1972, Tom honorably served in the United States Marine Corps. His enlistment allowed him to travel and live in many places, including Memphis, Tennessee; Yuma, Arizona; and San Diego, California. After his service, Tom and Patsy moved back to Franklin where they made their home and raised five children.

Children and teaching were passions for Tom. He spent his entire career as an educator and administrator. He began his career teaching in Calvert for one year and the remainder of his career teaching in Franklin, where he also served as the principal of the elementary and middle schools. He retired from education in May of 2004 after 33 years of service.

Tom was also known far and wide for his barbeque and love of cooking. He was very proud of his family’s lineage in Robertson County and loved the history of his hometown. His days were spent cooking, gardening and attending all of his grandchildren’s events.

After Patsy’s loss, Tom was blessed to find a cherished friend in Linda Braswell. With her companionship, he once again found joy and began exploring his faith in the Catholic Church.

Tom leaves behind his five children and their families; Tommy & Karen Cole of Franklin, Bobby & Jennifer Cole of Spring, Mandy & Kevin Foster of Bryan, Mary & Ross Bush of Franklin and Molly & Chris Smitherman of Franklin; sisters Mary Cole of Franklin and Liz & Dale Turney of Comanche, OK. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren; Holden Cole, Cole Foster, Caylee Cole, Taylor Smitherman Reinhardt, Kaden Foster, Cason Cole, Joshua Bush, Collin Smitherman, Jack Bush, Kye Foster, Ryan Smitherman & Jolie Bush.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at the Venue at Bonita Canyon in Franklin, TX.
