B. Gene Carter
November 1, 1931 - December 2, 2025
B. Gene Carter was born in Comanche, Texas on November 1, 1931, and passed away peacefully in Dallas, Texas on December 2, 2025.
He is predeceased by his mother Aileen Robertson Carter, father North Carter, brother Larry Carter, daughter Terilyn Paige Carter, and his first wife Iris Leone Carter. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Nancy, son B. Gene II (Kathryn), daughters Lari Leigh Klein and Merry Kathryn Carter; grandchildren Hunter Glasscock (Jennifer), Matt Klein (Hyejin), Taylor Glasscock, and Talia Carter; brother-in-law Wally Wolf (Vicki); great-grandchildren, Henry and Winston; and several nieces and nephews.
Gene attended Comanche High School before proudly serving in the Corps of Cadets and graduating from Texas A&M University in 1953. He went on to serve as a U.S. Army Ranger from 1954–1956-service that shaped his character, his discipline, and his deep sense of purpose. Though he later earned his law degree from "that school in Austin," Gene remained an Aggie through and through.
Gene began his professional life in Chicago with Velsicol Chemical, where his determination and strong leadership carried him to the role of Vice President. But true to his Texas roots, he eventually chose to return home and pursue a new path, launching a landscaping business. His passion for building soon took hold, and he founded Carter Properties, introducing the then-novel concept of garden office buildings. That passion blossomed into a remarkable career building hotels. Gene developed his first hotel, a Ramada Inn in Sherman, Texas, and from there built more than 170 Marriott and Hilton-branded properties across the Pacific Northwest, Arizona, and Texas. Each project reflected his work ethic, his vision, and his unwavering belief in creating opportunities for others.
Above all of Gene's professional accomplishments was the love he shared with his devoted wife and business partner, Nancy. Together they built not only a successful company-Western International, and their hotel management company, Texas Western Hospitality-but a life defined by partnership, mutual respect, and shared dreams. Nancy continues to carry forward the work they began together, honoring Gene's legacy with the same grace and commitment he inspired every day.
At Gene's request, there will not be a service. His wish was for every group of friends to get together and tell their famous "Gene" stories. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice or to Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences scholarship fund at 4461 TAMU, College Station, TX 77843-4461.
