Hugo Hilmar Stein, Jr. 

May 14, 1934 - January 2, 2026 

Hugo Hilmar Stein, Jr., born on May 14, 1934, in Flatonia, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, in San Antonio. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather whose life was characterized by his unwavering commitment to family, professional excellence, and passion for lifelong learning.

Hugo was raised in Flatonia, Texas. As a child, many family members spoke of his fascination with airplanes, even building several model airplanes. His grandfather and father owned and operated the Flatonia Stein Hardware Store from the late 1800’s to the mid 1970’s. His mother, Mary, an educated nurse, was an integral part of developing Hugo’s education and admittance into Texas A&M.

After graduating as valedictorian from Flatonia High School in 1951, Hugo went on to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M College at the young age of 17, graduating in 1955. It was shortly after his graduation he married his beloved wife, Gussie, and together they journeyed through life, residing in Fort Worth, Denver, San Diego, Abilene, and ultimately settling in San Antonio. Hugo worked for several aviation companies from 1955-1961.

Hugo began working at Kelly AFB in October of 1962. This was the beginning of his civil service career as a Mechanical Engineer in the Material Management Directorate at the San Antonio Air Logistics Center (SAALC). He took great pride providing engineering and technical support for two Mature Weapon Systems (T37/T38) and 31 Proven Weapon Systems (F5/C47/PC7).

He played an important role contributing his expertise and leadership to the design and development of several Acquisition Programs, such as the T38 Avionics Upgrade, the F5 Structural Upgrade Program and the T38 Propulsion Modernization Program.

Over his illustrious 37-year career, he held numerous positions including Lead Engineer, Engineering Unit Chief, and Engineering Division Chief. He was honored with various awards, including Outstanding Performance and Excellence in Management.

Beyond his professional achievements, Hugo was involved in his community, serving as past Committee Chairman for the St. Phillips College Aircraft Technology Department Advisory Board and was an active member of organizations such as the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. He cherished the role of a Registered Professional Engineer and a private pilot, combining his love for engineering and aviation.

Even after retirement in June 1991, Hugo remained passionate about engineering and design, collaborating with his longtime friend, Jimmy Tubbs at Engine Components (ECI). He provided his engineering expertise while mentoring young inspiring engineers. His creativity extended beyond his profession; he designed house plans for friends and family and managed extensive DIY projects, including a multi-year venture at the Syler farm near Muldoon, and a large remodeling project for their home in San Antonio.

Hugo was known for his friendliness, problem solving skills, straightforward personality commanding respect with his handshake and wise counsel. He never met a stranger. Those who knew him cherished his dedication and loyalty to his family, his craftsmanship in DIY projects along with his passion for Texas A&M, having Aggie football season tickets for nearly 30 years.

He found joy in gardening, a love inherited from his parents, and he and Gussie maintained a thriving garden for over six decades in Hollywood Park. He relished the opportunity to fly with friends to the annual Oshkosh Plane Show, even able to co-pilot and fly a private plane.

He is survived by his children and their spouses: Rodney, Robert, Richard and spouse Susie, Virginia Lee and spouse Greg; grandchildren, Ashley Guillen, Amber Stein, Reagan Stein, Hailey Stein, Grace Lee; and great-grandchildren Dillon, Dalton, Augustine, Alijah, Ariel, Emma, and Iris.

Hugo is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gussie Stein, married 67 years; his parents, Hugo H. Stein Sr. and Mary Stein; and cousins Robert Niemann, Gretchen Zapalac and many aunts and uncles.

As we remember Hugo Hilmar Stein, Jr., we celebrate a life filled with love, dedication, and remarkable accomplishments. His legacy of hard work and passion for family will endure in the hearts of those he leaves behind. He led his life with purpose, precision and passion. He built more than structures, he built family, friendships and a lasting legacy.

Visitation will be on Thursday, January 15, 2026, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. followed by a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Flatonia. 

The Funeral Mass Celebrating the Life of Hugo Stein will be Friday, January 16, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flatonia followed by graveside service at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
