Gilbert Rogers '69 January 22, 2026 1:45 PM updated: January 22, 2026 1:50 PM

Gilbert Wayne Rogers, MAJ USA (Ret)

December 29, 1941 - October 31, 2025

Gilbert Wayne Rogers, age 84, of Teague, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on October 31, 2025, at 12:08 p.m.

Gilbert, the eldest son to Maurice and Lula Rogers, was born in Vernon, Texas, on December 29, 1941. As a child, Gilbert wanted to be a cowboy and had a vivid imagination that led him to follow many adventures later in life. In his hometown of Vernon, Gilbert attended high school and held a position on the Track Team in the mile relay. He was known as ambitious, bright, kind, athletic, and respected. His participation in the Engineers Club led him to pursue an education in College Station, Texas. After graduating from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree, he proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he attained the rank of Major, Field Artillery during his distinguished service from 1960 to 1993. Following his military career, Gilbert continued to serve others as Deputy Warden of Walker State Prison in Atlanta, Georgia, where he gave over 15 years of service. Before leaving Georgia, Gilbert pursued a career as a Licensed Private Investigator.

Known later in life as “Oldman Gil”, Gilbert enjoyed spending time with his wife Yvonne and their dog, Lil Bit, in Palm Bay, Florida, where they retired happily together. After 44 years together, Yvonne went home to be the Lord. It was then by the grace of God that Gilbert recovered from numerous health obstacles and found his ending home in Texas, where he could be closer to his daughter, Tobi. Here he spent his last years being near his granddaughters and son-in-law.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Yvonne Rogers of Palm Bay, Florida; his daughter, Tobi Guerrero of Teague, Texas; his stepchildren, Cathy Leitner, Larry Cannon and Carol; his brother, Michael Rogers of College Station, Texas, and his parents, Maurice and Lula Rogers.

He is survived by his son-in-law, Luis Guerrero of Teague, Texas; his granddaughters, Kori Guerrero of Los Angeles, California, Haley West and her husband Dustin West of Corsicana, Texas, and Macy Castles and her husband Cameron Castles of Tyler, Texas; and one precious great-granddaughter, Emery West.

Gilbert will be remembered for his joyful spirit, his ever-present smile, and his deep love for his family—especially his granddaughters, who were his pride and joy. His strong ambitions, integrity, and kindness touched the lives of all who knew him.

A memorial service celebrating Gilbert’s life was held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Eastview Memorial Cemetery in Vernon, Texas.

Though he will be deeply missed, we rejoice knowing that Gilbert is now in the presence of his Savior, reunited with loved ones who went before him, and resting in eternal peace.
