John Gordon "Jack" McNeely, Jr.
May 2, 1938 - September 29, 2025
John (Jack) G. McNeely, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on September 29, 2025 at 87 years old, surrounded by family and his faithful dogs. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose presence brought warmth and steady love to everyone who knew him.
Jack was born May 2, 1938, in Arkansas to John G. McNeely, Sr. and Lillian McNeely. He was the older brother of David and Mary. Raised in Bryan, Texas, he went on to pursue a career in higher education that would become one of his greatest sources of pride. He earned his Bachelor's Degree at Texas A&M University, his Master's Degree at New Mexico State University, and his PhD in Agricultural Economics and Statistics at Oklahoma State University.
Jack moved to Reno in 1967 and spent much of his career as a dedicated Associate Professor of Applied Economics and Statistics in the UNR College of Agriculture. In 2001, he was granted Emeritus status from UNR. Jack was proud of his academic work and the students he guided over the years. He spent the latter portion of his career as a Commercial Appraiser and obtained the MAI credential.
For decades, he was an active member of the Reno Host Lions Club. As one of the first recipients of a cornea transplant in 1980, Jack was dedicated to the Lions’ charitable work in making eyesight accessible. It was in his time with the Lions Club that he earned the affectionate nickname "Dessert Jack."
Born with a competitive spirit in the best possible way, Jack was a lifelong athlete and avid card player, winning games of 500 Rummy against his family up to the very end of his life. He loved animals dearly and was rarely without a loyal four-legged friend by his side.
Above all, Jack cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dee, and his daughters Allison, Andrea, and Nicole. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Jesse, David Paul, Josephine, Maia, and Madison, and great-grandfather to Lydia. His wisdom, quick wit, humility, and gentle strength will be deeply missed and carried forward in the memories and stories shared by those who love him.
A funeral Mass of Resurrection will be held on Monday, November 3, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church (1138 Wright St, Reno, NV). Following the service, dessert will be served in honor of our dearest “Dessert Jack.” He will be remembered always with love and gratitude.
