Linda Green Horton
July 14, 1939 - August 22, 2025
Linda Green Horton, 86, of Athens, Texas passed away Friday August 22, 2025. She was married to Guy Horton of the Blackjack community in rural Athens for 54 years, and they shared a mutual passion for education and teaching. Linda was in the first class of women admitted to Texas A&M University and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Missouri.
Linda taught middle school and college English and Journalism, local ESL and citizenship classes, and tutored students in her home, creating many lifelong friendships along the way. She was also an active volunteer in Athens, supporting causes benefitting the neediest in the community, and was past president of the Henderson County Food Pantry. She taught Sunday School classes and was active in the First United Methodist and First Presbyterian churches in Athens.
She will be remembered for her smile and joyous spirit, intrepidness, the love of a good debate and standing firm on her principles.
Linda was predeceased by Guy in 2013. She is survived by her daughters Ellen (Ken) Shriner of Boynton Beach, FL and Amy (Robert) Hayhurst and grandson Nathan Hayhurst of Canyon, TX. She is also survived by her sisters Ann (Jim) Steger of Wall, TX and Martha Steetle of Galveston, a special cousin Ruth Anne (Royce) Plemmons of Marshall, TX, her sister-in-law Nelda Horton of Chandler and many nieces and nephews.
She leaves behind dear friends who cherished her kindness, sense of humor, intellect and brassiness.
A celebration of Linda’s life will be held Monday September 8, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
