Roll Call Tribute

Jason McAlister '11 January 6, 2026 12:34 PM updated: January 6, 2026 12:39 PM

Jason Ross McAlister

December 28, 1971 - October 6, 2025

Jason was the kindest, most gentle man. He lived a good life on his own terms. He always tried to do the "right" thing, even if it were not in his own best interest. As a toddler he was always surrounded by domestic and wild animals, as though they instinctively felt his gentleness.

He left home early to finish high school in West where he had grown up, away from family, but surrounded by friends. Graduated college from TSU in San Marcos, with a Masters Degree from Texas A&M, raised a son, traveled overseas but eventually returned to Central Texas and San Marcos which he loved. He came back from San Marcos for his many friends to help with the clean-up from the West Explosion. They needed help and he made it a point to be there.

His job kept him on the road from Ozona to Orange and Corpus Christi to Emory. He made friends all along the way. The outpouring of prayers and concern from around the state from what were total strangers to the rest of the family, was overwhelming but not surprising in retrospect. He was that kind of person. Everyone was his friend.

He is survived by his son, Mercer McAlister, mother and father Janet and Ron McAlister, and loving sister Farah Bural, who has carried the family through the last three months. Also surviving are niece Madison Bural and brother-in law Jon Bural and cousin Melanie Beaman. In addition to his loving family, Jason will be forever in the hearts of his "chosen family", his vast circle of friends. Among his many dear friends including those who spent time with him in the hospital and many others who were too far away, but kept us supported as we supported him are the late Paul Perry, the late Michael Ray, Lara (Hall) Perry, Jamie Brown, Mindi Licalsi, and Dana Stanly. Especially noted, Kara Germany, John John Stanton and lifelong friends Chris Rankin and Melissa Adair, who demonstrated their love for Jason by helping the family care for him during the last months of his life.

Jason will be remembered as a devoted son, loving father, an awesome brother and the truest of friends. He had a heart that had no limits. He showed the depth of that heart by giving each of us a piece of it. Whether it was a spontaneous adventure in his FJ or a job we could not do alone, he was there. We are grateful for the time we had with him and the profound impact he has made on our lives.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Shepard Hill Cemetery in Willis, TX.
