Mark Christensen '72 November 19, 2025 1:25 PM updated: November 26, 2025 1:36 PM

Mark Edward Christensen

November 15, 1949 - November 5, 2025

Dr. Mark Edward Christensen, 75, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home, Nov. 5, 2025 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Nov. 15, 1949 to Carl Jorgen Christensen and Gene Marie Durham Christensen, Mark was the youngest of four children and was preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Olga Crippen, Betty Louise Ford, and Carl Jorgen Christensen, Jr. He is now joyfully reunited with them in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Mark’s early years took him across the United States and Canada, nurturing in him both curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. He was a proud Texas Aggie ‘72, and it was at Texas A&M University that he met the love of his life, Margaret Perry, on a blind date to a Fightin’ Texas Aggie football game. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Texas A&M and later a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University.

Known affectionately by his students as Dr. C, Mark spent 35 years inspiring students at Texas A&M, University of Missouri Kansas City, and Georgetown College, where he received the Don and Chris Kerr Cawthorne Award for Excellence in Teaching. Upon his retirement, he was honored with the title Professor Emeritus at Georgetown College.

Mark was a quiet, kind, and soft-spoken man of great integrity whose faith in the Lord Jesus Christ was nurtured in a Christian home but a personal relationship with Jesus Christ developed later in his adult life. A member of Central Church in Georgetown, he loved the Lord deeply and lived a life that reflected that love in all he did.

Beyond the classroom, Mark had a zest for life and a love of the outdoors. Mark spent countless hours playing his piano and singing to his favorite music accompanied by his grandies. Mark loved his family and rarely missed a chance to cheer the grandies from the sidelines, at dance recitals, band performances, and school plays. His steady presence and endless encouragement will be forever remembered by those he loved most.

Mark is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; his children: David Christensen, Sarah (Patrick) Huston, and Emily (Chris) Brothers; and his cherished grandchildren: Aidan, Baker, Hannah, Adelyn, Cecelia, Lucibelle, Olivia, and Markus.

His life was one of quiet strength, unwavering faith, and profound love.

A Celebration of Life Open House will be held at The Full Shelf Christian bookstore, at the Corner of Military and Clayton Avenues, in Georgetown, KY on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 23, 2025, from 2-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to or volunteer at your favorite animal shelter. Mark so loved all of his furry friends.
