Janyce Louise (Cornick) Seahorn, DVM 

October 4, 1956 - October 21, 2025 

Dr. Janyce "Jan" Seahorn, 69, of Georgetown, Kentucky, passed away on October 21, 2025. A beloved mother, sister, mentor, and friend to all she met, she devoted her life to caring for animals and the people who loved them.

Born in Morning Sun, Iowa, on October 4, 1956, to Dwight and Lorna Mae (Carlson) Cornick, Jan grew up riding horses with her family/friends and cultivating the compassion, grit, and curiosity that would define her career. She earned her DVM from the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine (1979–1983), completed an equine internship at the University of Missouri (1983–1984), and pursued a Large Animal Internal Medicine residency at Texas A&M University (1984–1987), followed by a Veterinary Anesthesia residency at Texas A&M (1987–1989). She later completed board certifications with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (1990), the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (1991), and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (2002). In 1990, Jan joined the Louisiana State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she served as Assistant Professor and then tenured Associate Professor of Anesthesia (1990–1999). A gifted and passionate teacher, she received the Norden Teaching Award (1995) and the LSU Distinguished Teaching Award. She authored numerous scientific articles and one book entitled Veterinary Anesthesia (2001) and mentored countless students, interns, and residents who cherished both her high standards and kindness. Her greatest strength was her ability to develop lifelong connections through leadership and teaching. She had high expectations for her students because she believed in their potential.

Jan moved to Georgetown, Kentucky, in 1999 and continued to practice veterinary medicine through private anesthesia casework and consulting across the United States (1999–2025), including work with Woodford Equine Hospital, Lexington Equine Hospital, Park Equine Hospital, and Kentucky Equine Hospital. Colleagues knew and respected her passion for work and her competence.

She was a faithful and active member of First United Methodist Church of Georgetown, where she taught Sunday School for many years and found community. Away from work, Jan poured her heart into family, friends, and simple joys: cheering little league, high school, and college baseball; horseback riding; and sharing her kitchen's bounty, home-grown apple, pear, and blackberry jellies, salsas, and cookies.

Competitive yet patient, passionate and opinionated yet unfailingly caring, she had a gift for understanding people and making lasting connections-often with a listening ear and another story to tell.

Jan is survived by her sons, Brad and Sam Seahorn; her partner and friend, Tom Seahorn; her brother Terry Cornick (Paige); and her sister Debbie Conard (Kerry).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dwight and Lorna Mae Cornick. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 10–11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1280 Lexington Rd, Georgetown, KY 40324. A private ceremony will be held for family and friends in Morning Sun, Iowa at a later date.
